Chuck has always been good about tooting his own horn, that's for sure. Could his tune helped? IDK. Maybe.

Thank you. Clearly I'm totally hopeless with graphs.

owned lt1 auto and a 6 speed both 92s. Drove a zr1 exactly once and never even sat in an lt4 so im sure no expert on this. The zr1 felt alot stouter then my lt1. Real life theres probably not alot more then a 1/2 second between them buy a 1/2 second is substantail. Where the z realy impressed me was up past 80mph where the lt1 is pretty tame. Drove a few c5s. I drove one of the first ones off the assembly line. My neighbor dated a guy that worked testing cars for Gm and brought home a yellow 97 with an auto and it may have been faster but we both agreed that punching the 97 or my auto 92 below 50 and the lt1 felt faster punch them over 50 and the ls1 felt faster.

Now the 03 zo6 he turned me loose with was a differnt animal. It felt punchier at any speed then any of the others and buy a good margin. Bottom line is that with 300hp on tap its pretty lame by todays performance standards. Even the z06s 405 isnt all that impressive. But ill say one thing. Ive owned lots of old muscle cars from the 60s and 70s and very few of them would run an honest 14 second quarter mile and many like the ss396 chevelles and the lt1 vettes and the 389 gtos were lucky to do a 15.

I remember when i took my 87 gn home brand new. That thing was quicker then any muscle car ive owned and you could drive it to church. A lt1 vette stock will eat a stock Gn for lunch. The Gn is a bit more responsive to bolt ons and with a 1000 dollar buget would spank a lt1 but fact remains that even an lt1 stock isnt a slug. I guess ive rambled on and reminist enough now

i love reading the stats of an LT1 vs LT4...i would honestly say that if i drove both, i'm sure i'd be bad and slow in both....it sort of reminds me of the story of Zora Duntov out testing some corvettes (i think it was some C2s), the test drivers were trying to get to a certain speed (can't remember what the # they were trying to achieve) to prove something w/ some engine mods, etc....but when Zora drove the cars, he got speeds of 15 mph faster than the test drivers, he had been a race driver, and was really into making the corvette a great performance race car....so there are parts of me that think: IT'S THE DRIVER that can make the difference....

i have driven 2 LT1s (a 93 and 96), and even though their engine is probably a hair less HP than my 06 volvo XC90, they still felt like powerful/fast cars, even if they were 21 and 18 years old!!!! and they were fun to drive!!!!!

Default lt1 VS LT4

Well I don't know about the numbers, but I have gone on a run in the mtns with a group of Vets and one was a LT4. On the way to the mountains he would take off and I would catch him before the next stop sign in the flat lands. He was shocked and wanted to know what I had done to my LT1 to make it faster than his LT4. See my mods below. It can happen with just a little tinkering.

You are comparing a modified car to a stock car?

IMO, assuming equal drivers, tires etc. The LT4 will be quicker. The main things that will hurt the LT1 is a 1400 stall converter and the gear ratio drop between 1 and 2. Of course the 30hp makes some difference as well.

When modding comes in, just a higher stall (2600-3000) and 3.73-4.10 gears would make the LT1 way quicker from 0-60 over a STOCK LT4

Edit to add, when my vette was bone stock, I put a 3000 stall converter and 3.54 gears in it. On mich. pilot sports, I have time slips with 1.7x 60ft times and 12.91 at 105.xx mph.

So... there's hope for our LT1's, yet!

A month ago, I caravaned with an '04 Z06 down to Palm Beach Raceway, crossing a barren Florida in the middle of the night on 441. Now, I'm not directly comparing an ever-so-slightly modified A4 LT1 to a C5 Z06. However, there were several occasions when we'd both get on it and, there were several times when I'd get the jump on him (probably caught him in the wrong gear). When we finally stopped for gas on the outskirts of Palm Beach, his remark was, "Damn, I didn't think you're car was that fast!" Made me feel just a little taller!

i should dig out my "Corvette from the Inside" book there are some charts in the book about 0-60 times for a bunch of vettes vs. some other cars. it's interesting to see.

on a side note: the ZR-1 was cancelled b/c of the LT4 engine, of course it had to do a lot w/ #s/$/cost of producing the engine for the ZR-1 and when the LT4 came out , it was felt that the #s were close enough to what the ZR1 could do, etc...well, and the fact that the engine was produced outside of GM...
in the book, there is some funny discussion, about the GM engine folks were upset that they didn't come to them to try to produce the ZR1's engine, b/c they thought they could do it and they thought they could do it cheaper than what the original engines were made for. so it's all interesting stuff. you sort of wonder why some business decisions are made and why they go down certain roads....

and of course you should also know that the development of the C5, they talked about the benchmark of the ZR1 engine, getting close to the HP #s, but at a better cost for the customer, and of course keeping in mind gas mileage and emissions standards....it is stated that they are just trying to make the best corvette for the best price to the consumer...which is an admirable idea for a big co. i think!

it should also be noted that there is a quote in the book that the C4 is a great platform to mod, plain and simple. and there is an interesting part about the callaway mods and how the callaway folks had a very different idea of hot-rodding the early C4 engines vs. what the GM engineers had in mind...

Really? Wow, that's a really good non-comparison!

There always has been "hope". There is "hope" for ANY engine that you modify, that it will beat some other stock engine'd car.

And LG4 could beat an LT4....if you put about $2000.00 into it.

[QUOTE=DrDyno;1588154997]So... there's hope for our LT1's, yet!

The LT series motor is no slouch. I don't think anyone will argue that the LS series has more potential, but the LT motors of today run better then the ones from 10-20 years ago. Heads alone have been developed in the past few years that are affordable and can flow in excess of 300 cfm. That was unheard of in the past.
A streetable 450-475 rwhp LT is not that hard to build, and it has the potential to run in the 10's
So yes there is much hope for the LT motors.

I don't have much opportunity comparing my '93 (M6) to other C4s. I bought mine exactly a year & 2 days ago............& in that entire time I've seen 5 other C4s while driving it or my dd, sitting at a cafe or doing whatever. Out here in the SF Bay Area I'd bet that one is 10 times more likely to encounter a Tesla than any Corvette of any year.

Now, we barely exceeded the speed limit but, in those few seconds, I took him easily... with my A/C on! I just saw this & remembered the story of your GTO encounter. 100 extra horses & 60 lbs extra torque doesn't mean much when one is almost 600 lbs heavier.
