Finally changed low temp switch and this is what happens
Ran a thread months ago on this topic and got a bunch of great info .
I have a 84 with cross fire
I feel my engine runs way too hot,
Overheated many times, and when I shut engine I can hear hissing and see smoke coming from radiator cap.
Fan kicks on around 224 ( sometimes 228 ) cuts off around 205 .
On the 84 there is only one fan
After many months of vette sitting finally installed low temp switch
Ecklers is selling a aftermarket switch that gives buyer 3 options of what temp the fan should kick on.
Came with easy directions for install
Chose the switch that turns cooling fan on 187
Mfg claims should be a 15 - 20 degree drop before it closes.
They also have a disclaimer all vehicles differ and temp off could be different on each vehicle
Prior too install flushed radiator many times,
new hoses
New thermostat . ( don't remember what temp thermostat opens )
Fan kicks on when temp is 187 but does not shut off since vehicle runs hotter then 167, so basically runs all the time .
I am in hot Florida and might operate different in cooler weather but in the middle of hot summer this is what car is presently doing
Ran garden hose with cool water directly to radiator from front of car.
Fan shut off 155.
stayed off until 187 .
Did this many times and fan shuts 155
No way will fan be able too cool water temp lower then 165
Has any body installed additional fan on the 84 ?
Thermostat temp too low for the switch ?? A higher temp thermostat ? Don't know if it really makes a difference ?
I am happy if fan runs all the time, finally car runs cool but will burn out leaving he high & dry on a trip etc
thanks

Clean your radiator they are big vacuum cleaner and get plugged up. Your just going to burn up your fan faster by running it all the time.

187 is definitely too cool for the fan switch, no wonder your fans are running all the time. If you want to run a cooler fan switch, run something in the 210-215 range approx, that is certainly cooler than 224. Assuming your cooling system is healthy, all should be OK.
Do not change the thermostat temp, keep that stock. Remember the thermostat temp only controls the temperature at which the coolant BEGINS flow through the radiator. In other words, the thermostat can only open so much -- the maximum engine temp depends on the rest of the system working properly.

x2 from the backside spend plenty of time blasting the fins out, may get the condenser too you will def notice a difference I do all my cars ea yr or two depending on miles. If the inside is crusty just replace it they are cheap.
Have it come on 200, 210 max, I believe in 160 stats if youre in a warm climate. Your motor isnt going to wear out prematurely like the internet would have you thinking. On at 185 as said is no good the fan always runs

Is there some reason you are asking the same question again? Is there some misunderstanding on the suggestions you received earlier?

My fan doesn't kick on until around 235 and came equipped with a 190º thermostat.
You have added a fan set to keep the car from ever reaching normal operating temperature.
Coolant temperature is a critical input to the the ECU for the correct air fuel mixture.
Making it run cooler is easy but the trade off may well be it doesn't run as designed.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? The '84 is designed to run hot. Normal operating temperature is 190º to 255º.
