I changed speedo gears in the transmission.

I think the computer can be reprogrammed to adjust it also. I would like to learn more about the programming and what parameter(s) need changed. I will probably try this for next time.

Good luck.

It depends on the year. Before 1990, the signal from the VSS went to the dashboard, got divided by 2 and then was sent to the ECM. Starting in 1990, the signal went to the ECM first and then to the dashboard. That will affect what you do to fix the problem.

That said, check Dakota Digital:

If a 315 rear tire you do a 45 tooth driven gear and consider it done!

45 tooth gears are really hard to find but I have a 44 tooth speedo gear that will get you close (around 2 mph) that I'll sell you if interested. $75 shipped.

Remove the VSS and slip off one gear, slip on the other and reinstall the VSS. You might want to purchase an o-ring for the VSS. I replace it everytime.

Does the exhaust need to be removed at all? This sounds way to easy to do.

It is easy BUT I believe I'd live with the 42 tooth, drive with a GPS and make a mental note of the actual and drive on. Once you find a 45 then do it.
