Default OBDII Tunercat for '96 Vettes

I sent TC an email the other day about it and this was his response:

Hi Nathan,

Thank you for your e-mail regarding our OBDII Tuner program.

Our OBDII Tuner is now available with support for the following vehicles:

OBD2_07 1996 - 1997 Vortec Trucks (4.3L, 5.7L, 7.4L)
OBD2_06 1998 - 2000 Vortec Trucks (4.3L, 5.7L, 7.4L)
OBD2_02 1999 - 2000 LS1 Trucks (4.3L, 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L)
OBD2_08 1996 - 1997 Camaro/Firebird/Corvette/Impala LT1
OBD2_01 1999 - 2001 Camaro/Firebird/Corvette LS1

OBD2_04 2003 - 2005 LS1 Trucks (4.3L, 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L)
OBD2_05 2002 - 2003 Camaro/Firebird/Corvette LS1
OBD2_10 2004 Corvette
OBD2_12 2004 GTO

The following are scheduled for release soon:

OBD2_09 1997 - 1998 Camaro/Firebird/Corvette LS1

The OBDII Tuner package sells for $379.95 and includes the following:

OBDII Tuner Program on CD
OBDII/RS232 Interface
OBDII Cable
RS232 Cable
Your choice of one Vehicle Definition File

Additional Vehicle Definition Files can be purchased for $79.95 each.

As with all our software, the OBDII Tuner program is not VIN locked to a single vehicle.

Since we don't have the OBDII Tuner up in the web site yet, you can either order via PayPal (to tc@tunercat.com) or send a check or money order to:

C.A.T.S.
14327 Dogwood Lane
Belle Haven, VA 23306

You'll need the OBD2_08 Vehicle Definition File for your '96 Corvette.

You can download a demo version of the OBDII Tuner program at:

www.tunercat.com/obd2/obd2tnr_demo.zip

To install the demo program just unzip and run the installation program.

Best regards,

TC
I already ordered a kit and may post some pictures and screengrabs as soon as I get it.

You will find that it works great and the best part is that its cheaper than the competitions software and its not locked to one PCM. I have been using it for some time now. The software package is easy to use, and support is outstanding.

I really love the organization of it.

I think I found a bug (at least in the LS1 revisions) It seems that when you turn off a diagnostic with more than 1 window open it reverts back to stock when you save..

Be on the lookout that the software may have a few bugs.. We are very fortunate that John at TC steps up fast to take care of them though

Forgot to mention that there should be a datalogging utility coming out soon for the OBD2 Tunercat cable.

This indeed is great news, however I was hoping for a bit le$$.

I'm sure there was a hell of a lot of engineering involved in this as well as bug sorting time. Granted I'm not a bussiness man but I would think once the software is written and the cables can be mass produced it could be sold a bit cheaper.

Ehh I'll probably buy it anyway, I just wanted to see something more along the lines of $200.00 or a bit more.

At least there's another player out there.

If you had any idea how much time went into developing the software you'd probally realize that your not paying enough.

There is over 8000 lines of code in a typical LS1 PCM file. A few years ago the relatively simple but complex at the time 7747 ECM was just a 4kb file. A couple years later the file size increased to 16kb, then 32kb, later to 128kb for the OBD1 PCMs, then 256 and now 512. The chip sizes started out as a simple 2732 chips with 4k of memory to 128k to 256 then to 512k. Then the OBD1 PCMs had two 512kb flash memory chips to the OBD2 PCMs with 1mb chips. As these processors get more power and more complex the code also gets exponentially complex as well.

Its hard to imagine the time it takes to reverse engineer the code and be able to translate it to a usable form that the average Joe can use to tune with. In the old days it was all done in HEX editing the code a single edit at a time. Now we have the luxury of having tables made for us that we can understand with a simple X and Y axis based on RPM and Load.

You know after thinking about it some more when you consider the Hypertech goes for $399.00 maybe $375.00 for something with much more functionality isn't so bad.

Now all I need to do is convince my Wife this is something I need and can't do without. Any suggestions?

Do you have any experience with changing the Fan On Threshold settings for the '96? I tried turning the low mph threshold down and let the car set at idle without AC on but the fans never came on.

-Shane

P.S.-- I already love the software and the fact that more software is being written to add scantool functionality and WB O2 inputs is the cherry on top!

Why the big deal about wideband? If the stock one is working OK why mess with it. Is there anything to be gained?

Stock O2 sensors don't really help much when trying to tune after you make a major change and try to track tune it yourself without access to a dyno. Hell, I might even find out that the current sensors I have in at shot.

The Tunercat interface is also supposed to have a faster transfer rate and will allow for faster refresh rates on the values that you are scanning than the current Autotap kit will allow.

Looks identical to my '95, without the OBDII specific things like misfire detection.

I know I'm I'm gonna get bashed for this but mine was throwing that code intermittently along with a MAF code. I checked the screen, it was clogged, I removed it, both codes have since ceased. I don't know what one would have to do with the other but my problems are gone.

Hey ALLT4: I just recently installed a cam, long tubes, 3" exhaust (no cats), 4:11 rear gear, elec water pump, delteq ignition. On the dyno
it put down 347RWHP. The mechanic used LT1 edit to do a basic tune.
One problem I have is that when you turn on the A/C, the engine stall
out. The mechanic told me that the LT1 edit has no provisions to raise
the idle - thus - I can't use my A/C. I am seriously thinking about
purchasing the TC program. How well do you like it? Is it easy to use?
Any bugs? Thanks in advance

I apologize but you're going to have to wait for someone else to respond. I'm still trying to come up with creative ways to convince the old lady I need headers, hotcam, catback and this program.
