I pulled my ECM tonight and it has this number:

Is this legit? I don't recall this number for an '88. Thanks for any help.

Your ECM is a "service part" and has been replaced at least once already, the number on yours is the correct service replacement for an '88 and would carry the label of the replacement. An original label would have shown a # 1227165.

Alright, thanks. I am getting a Moates adapter and a chip for my '88. Will anything made for #1227165 work then for my ECM? Just wanting to be sure. Thanks!

Anything engineered for a 1227165 would be considered correct for the ECM you have. How much is the Moates adapter these days? I may have one to sell.

As far as I know the only difference between the 1227165 and the service part (the link to the picture didn't work for me -- my info says it's 16198259) is an added wire that adds a MAP input.

Hi MrWillys are you saying that, other than a MAF circuit, this ECM has an implemented MAP (manifold absolute pressure sensor) imput ? am i right?

Yes, the 7165 was used in the S10 2.5 with a MAP sensor. If you go to Tunercat's website and click on ECM definitions you can see the different broadcast codes that used the 7165.

The 1227165 ECM was used in a bunch of vehicles (I made this list so I could be on the lookout when I went to the Pick Your Part junkyard):
