Default Problem ECM Hypertech Power Chip

I own a 1990 Corvette, 6 speed, factory stock, except ....

Previous owner installed a Hypertech 150372 Power Chip. This is the Thermo Master chip.

The factory specifications say that L98 engines will rev up to 5500 rpm. This engine will not rev above 3500 rpm. At 3500 it stops flat, like there is a governor attached to the engine.

Any ideas ?

Thanks, JW

do you have the stock memcal, if so install it and see what happens, If you can data log that would help also. also are you sure your tach is accurate.

Default Problem ECM Hypertech Power Chip

The Corvette has a Hypertech Power Chip, Thermomaster, in it.

The 1990 Corvette has never revved over 3500 rpm, hits 3500 rpm and flattens out like it has a governor on it.

Today I removed the Hypertech chip and reinstalled the stock Corvette chip. In neutral, parked, the engine freely reves up to 5500 rpm. When I cursed around the block, 4500 rpm was easily obtained, on a busy residential street I did not want to jeopardize any traffic. I was able to obtain 4500 rpm several times, with some hesitation and surge, but I think this could be resolved with a tune-up.

It just goes to show you how worthless these performance chips really are, $200.00 ????

Thank you all for you input and advice. I would not have achieved my results without your information.

Not worthless to Hypertech--they have $200 of the P.O.'s moolah
