Default Brake Booster: Metal vs. Plastic

I need to replace the brake booster in my 92 LT1. The ACDelco plastic part can be had on Ebay for about $250. There is a metal canister that sells for less than half, $120. Can someone tell me which one is the better choice? The price of the metal canister sounds good but is it as good as the plastic one

All other things equal, there shouldn't be any
performance difference between metal and plastic
when both are new. The benefit of metal
will become apparent down the road.

The plastic units do not seem to be able to tolerate
the heat in the engine compartment and need to
be replaced when the canister fails. This arguement
is born out by the number of posts here about hard
pedals accompanied by hissing leaks. Together
with the frequent posts asking for help reducing
operating temps and it adds up to a harsh
environment for plastic that sits just above the
manifold/header on cars that regularly get driven hard.

I agree with those in favor of a quality metal
replacement (should probably put a few of the OEM
units aside for the future when prices on these cars
rebound, though). What's not to love about a part
that lasts longer and costs half as much?

There is also the Hydroboost. Not for everyone,
but if long overlap makes adequate vacuum a
problem or if just being able to whip your ABS into
a froth effortlessly is paramount, give this a look. I
can vouch for the remarks on this site about Paul.
Great vendor to deal with - he'll tell it the way it
is and back up what he promises.

Just replaced mine - the part came fast - and a great price.

for additional protection from radiated exhaust header heat, i applied several coats of engine enamel to the whole metal booster + DEI heat tape to the bottom/side portion closest to the header primaries.

is this overkill? maybe, but its inexpensive and hopefully rather effective.

My booster got a split in the rubber diaphram along the edge. I got a new one for about $30. to the door. It took all of about 10 minutes to change it once I had it out of the car.
Works like new.

I wasn't able to find a metal one on ebay that would work on my 92. www.hotrodsusa.com has a booster for $129(not 120 like I indicated first) which he says will work. We'll see.?
