LT1 EGR Removal...Pros/Cons/How To
Well considering how much of a pian in the butt it is to pull the egr everytime you take off the headers or the intake manifold on an LT1, I was wondering what was to be gained by removing it completely. Are there any drawbacks? Besides the pipes, hoses, valve what else has to be removed? I know I'll need a set of block off plates and the egr taken out of the tune but what else will I need/need to do?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

That site makes it sound like a good thing. The only reason I thought about removing it now was because I have some of it apart and the 396 I will be building and installing has an LT4 intake without the EGR.
Thanks again,

I will warn you, the EGR is required on your car, and with states adopting more strignent emissions testing, you will fail, unless you pick the right cam to keep NOx down.
NJ is one of the NE states adopting those tougher Cali like standards.
Don't say I didn't warn you.

Well I'm considering registering the car as a collector car to eliminate the need for emissions. Considering wrench-time and down-time I think I'll be able to abide by the mileage limitation.

Bogus is right. If you live in ****-ville It would be wise to keep em on. Although your car should easily pass emissions if you still have bullet cats and a good tune, It may not pass their visual.
I have fully removed my system and it is wonderful. Love the extra room and the clearance gained. Spark plug changes take me 30 minutes now where before it was hours.
Besides block-off plates you will need custom tuning to eliminate the need for EGR/AIR in the computer. It will throw a code without the system in place so this is a must. Also you can track the EGR pipes and remove the AIR pump (Lower left headlight) Along with some other components.

I agree, there are very few reasons to eliminate EGR.
And, several good reasons to keep it.
Reaons to eliminate it:
1) You have too much EGR at part throttle because of a wild cam
2) EGR stuff gets in the way.
Reasons to keep it:
1) It doesn't hurt performance because it is shut off at WOT.
2) Required for inspections.
3) Resale value when the only person that looked at your car is from California.
4) It cools peak combustion temperature (that is exactly what it is supposed to do) and helps eliminate detonation.
5) Why pollute when there isn't any benefit.

3) Cakes inside of Intake manifold and TB components with Exhaust soot. Can cause issues with TB Idle Air screw and any other sensors which probably wouldn't do well with build-up over an extended amount of time.

Someone posted a link to a site that explains it, I don't pretend to know the science.

Well I am going with the LT4 intake on a 396, with longtubes so EGR is going this winter anyway. For now I have some of the stuff off and figured I might as well keep it off. Any other specific thing to remove? I see the pipes, hoses and the motor but there are also other things along the wa I am not sure about.
Thanks,
Dave

Do them right the first time, then you don't have to mess with the EGR but once...
