Sealant on auto tranny pan gasket - yes or no?
I know the factory and most shops don't use a sealant (rtv) on the pan gasket, but then there are often those "little" leaks. What is best, and if I use a sealant, what kind? This is on my '96.

I've used Hypohalomar (sp?)HPF, and it sealed up pretty good. It's a non-hardening sealant.

Generaly none is used, just the gasket. Make sure hepan is not bent or dimpled from overtightening.

I bought the GM kit, and it came with two gaskets, one cork and the other rubber. There is a small note that tells you which to use, the rubber one. I didn't use any sealant and have had no problems. I made sure the pan was straight and everything was clean. I also tightened in small increments until reaching the correct torque value. If I were to use any sealant, I would use the Hylomar that was recommended above.

I have always spread a lite coat of white grease on the pan side to hold the gasket in place. i leave the trans side dry. never had a leak problem or trans problem. it has always been cork gaskets just because thats what came with the new filter. hope this helps robert

Thanks, guys. I will see about getting the Hylomar sealer. It just seems that without something extra, you get those tiny leaks.

I use just a little of the Permatex, non-harding type and never had a problem. It will also hold the gasket in place (cork type). Sid..
