headgasket replacement
Hello, I have a 92 with about 90K on it. I am about to install some long tube headers and need to replace the intake manifold gaskets ( china wall leaking, RIGHT STUFF, I know. It appears that my head gaskets are seeping some oil and I am told that with the aluminum on Iron setup this engine has, after a while these gaskets will fail. My engine does seem to miss a bit at idle even though most all the major electrical components have been replaced about 10K ago. I am guessing since I will have to replace the intake and exhaust gaskets it would be a good idea to replace the head gaskets as well. My question is how much more work is this going to be and or is this a good idea. I just don't want to open a can of worms here. Thanks for your help.

From what I've seen there aren't alot of head gasket failures on stock LT1's. But, since you will already have the intake and exhaust manifolds removed, changing the head gaskets will be relatively easy.
You may want to consider the GM Imp SS head gasket. It will raise your compression by ~1/2 point, and give you a little more HP with your other upgrades.

Cool, Is there anything special I should know or purchase before I dive in. Is this just a simple unbolt the heads, shave off old gasket, install new gasket, put heads back on and torque?

This would be a great time to add 1.6 roller rockers. What about your water pump? Still original?

get new head bolts and gaskets, and yes its pretty much take rockers off, pull pushrods, take head bolts off, pull head, take gasket off, clean surface, replace, in reverse order. pretty easy, the hardest thing to do will be to adjust your rockers but that really easy.
