90 Gas tank removal?
My leaky gas tank apparently is leaking at the seams and cannot be repaired. The mechanic said the book says 6 hours labor, but he doesn't think he can do it that quickly and was wondering if there are any tricks to making the job quicker and easier.

I think you gotta remove the rear bumper cover.... because the tank is mounted above the bumper, you may not be able to remove from the bottom.

It might be possible to do it in six hours, if your rear fascia fasteners aren't
rusted--but I wouldn't bet on it. You have to remove the rear exhaust, the
spare tire and cover, loosen the aluminum frame extension. You might be able
to leave the top center rear fascia fasteners in place, and just flex the fascia
outwards a little, but I don't know for sure--just pulled mine off all together.
Good luck.

Check with a body shop and see what they say. They have labor rates much lower and deal with this type of work on a regular basis.

The rear bumper cover MUST come off. Then you have to drop the rear tank frame down by removing some bolts on them back there..once the frame is lowered far enough, youll get some room to pull the tank out.Its very tight back there.
(and yes,all the other misc. parts like exhaust, tire cover, etc etc comes off too)
6 hours is assuming everything comes off easy.it wont..some nuts will snap off that hold the cover to the car,and some of the screws are very hard to get off because its so tight back there.
(if youre wondering,Yes ive done this before)

Here is a pic of what it will look like after you take the rear bumper face off. There are two metal and two plastic bands that hold the tank on. Also need to be careful lowering it, with all of the gas lines connected.

Thanks, a picture says a thousand words.
I'm having trouble finding a tank locally, so I think I will wait until the insurance company sells me back my old wreck and take the tank out of it. This is a big help.
