Default Gahhhh why me?!?!? Lifter replacement.

I finally got around to changing the lifters in my car after years of what always sounded like the #8 exhaust refusing to pump up fully and clacking like a broken sewing machine. Nothing major found during the tear down and reinstall so I was feeling pretty good.

Today I button up the last couple of things and get ready to fire it up. Coolant full, TPS @ 0.54v, rotor pointing at #1, no leaks at the fuel rail, MSD box all wired back up, no random bolts in the intake manifold (if you've been here long enough you know what I mean). Turn the key and a few seconds later it came to life. It was running a little rough and slow around 450 RPM as it was too advanced on the timing, but ooooooh my was it nice and quiet!! Yay!

We got the timing situated at 6* BTDC and fuel pressure at 42psi and the idle picked up to the normal 900'ish RPM and there it came.... <clack clack clack> You gotta be ****ting me!!! It sounds like the very same noise is back. And to add some extra 'what the hell', there is now a tiny bit of oil smoke from the exhaust it didn't have before. Oh... come on!

I didn't have time to pull off the valve cover, but we did pull each plug wire off the passenger side and it didn't make a difference. We also pulled the #6 and #8 injector connectors off where the sound seems to be coming from one at a time and it also made no difference.

The last time I tried adjuting the valves while the engine was running (before reinstalling the lifters) oil was coming out of each pushrod so I can't imagine it is an oiling issue. I'm going to also go back and check for any exhaut leaks, but it sounded too mechanical.

<sigh>

Thanks. Might go back and redo the valves while running at operating temp instead of cold too.

Is it misfiring at all? Might be a piece of carbon under a valve not letting it seat completely. Maybe a broken valve spring. Do a compression check on the cylinder you think it's coming from. Just a thought.

One of my friends had simular sounds, it was catalytic converter broken inside. It did transmit up and sound just like what you are talking about. It even changed when he reved the engine. It's worth a check....

Just a thought:
May want to take a look at the balancer to see if it has spun. Sounds like the noise came back once you adjusted what might not be exactly 6* BTDC any more.

If you are lucky, you broke the dampening spring inside of the actual spring.

Could be because the car sat for a while

Mine did that after I took it out of storage.

Went away after autox'ing it.

No misfires from the looks/sounds/feel of it.

Good suggestion, it was new 20k miles ago but anything is possible.

Will check when I pull the covers off.

It was just build up in the lifter for sitting so long.

Let me try this again. Did your car burn oil or have a lifter noise or both after sitting for a while?
