Wheeling and Dealing
Here is a bit of an example on what I mean by trying to keep cost more reasonable through a little wheeling and dealing. Knowing I was going to go with a SBC and auto I started watching the different classified forums to see what I could find.
I was able to find this 1984 S-10 drag truck (see below) with many parts I could use or sell. It had a 4 bolt 350 with Victor Jr Aluminum heads and intake, Quick Fuel 850 car, nitrous, braided lines, TCI turbo 350 trans, MSD 6AL, MSD Blaster Coil and a few other misc parts. To say the price was right was an understatement. The person who had it had traded for it, didnt need or want it and didnt know anything about it.
I bought the truck for $2000 hoping the motor had good internals but thnking even if it did not, between the heads and misc parts I still wouldnt lose money. It also had a 9" rear with spool and axles but I decided to leave that under the truck in order to make the rolling chassis easier to sell.
We pulled it all out and as it turned out the engine did have good internals. It had 4130 rods and crank, cylinder walls were great, Crane Magnum roller rockers and all the rest. I then cleaned up the truck put it up for sale and sold it for $1500.00. To get all the good pieces I got out this truck for $500 I think I made out like a bandit!
I have other deals already done I will cover later!

Next items we were able to acquire were a rear end and set of wheels and tires. Since we are back halfing the car we needed a strong narrowed rear end that can be set up with a 4 link. We found a Currie
9" that is the proper width with Strange axles, Strange spool and disk brakes. Also got a set of Weld wheels with Hoosier front runners and 33x15 Goodyears. This will be a good set of strip tires but we are going to need a set of street tires to go with them. The only thing we are going to have to do is change the rear end from a ladder bar to a 4 link which means we have to grind off the old brackets and weld on new ones. This gives us a good set of ladder bars to sell!
Cost for these items ran $1500. Not too bad if you've ever priced a racing rear end.

Definitely good buying.
I was speaking to a guy from my corvette club the other night and he suggested to me that a ford 9 inch diff can easily put in without backhalfing the car. He said "The c4 is already good for 11 inch tyres and the c4 apparantly has a type of 4 link already".

Been doing alot of disassembly. It has made me remember why I have dealt with tube chassis cars the last 15 years! Taking all this factory stuff out is a pain in the A$$. It took the better part of the day just to take the dash out! I now have the interior just about stripped bare and a little bit under the hood taken out. Making progress but it is slow, dont have alot of time to work on it and it is just too hot to stay out in the garage very long!

and another. Also in this picture was is a little idea that has worked out well. You can get wheel dolly's that allow you to roll your car around but if there are no wheels.......... I went to Harbour Freight, got 4 small 1000 lbs dolly's and some metal strap from Lowes. Strapped my aluminum jack stands to the dolly's and know I can roll my chassis around. It has really worked well for cutting out the pan. This way I can roll it out to the driveway to do the cutting so I dont get the fiberglass dust all over my garage. I just wash it off the driveway at the end of the day!

Started cutting out the tub. Used a cordless reciprocating saw that works really good. In tight places I use my cut off wheel. Saw cuts a lot faster and doesnt make as much dust.

That is a nice car but it appears he is a tube chassis drag car. We are just going to back half the factory frame, put coilovers on the stock front suspension and remain 100% street legal.
Here's one over at racing junk that looks OK too:

Well havent posted a while simply because I havent done much! We did get the rest of the rear pan cut out and dummied up the rear end to check for clearance. I have bought a pair of coliovers for the front end and am currently looking for some for the rear. I have a friend who builds dragster chassis who is going to build the rear clip for me but for budgets sake I am looking for a good set of used coilovers. Since the rear section will be a custom build I need to provide coilovers before he can know rail height.
I did aquire a set of Mickey Thompson 33 x 21.5 on Weld rims which will be my street tires. I think we have also finally made an engine decision. Originally my thoughts were to go with a traditional small block and a Hilborn port injection unit. Kinda of an old school look plus I already have a beautiful set of Hilborn injectors I could use. But after much thought on horsepower and streetability we have decided that set up wouldnt be very effective so now I think we are going with an LS motor, dual turbos and an intercooler.
I have a few photos of some of the equipment I have aquired so I will try to get those up soon.
