Need some opinions! 700r4 won't go into park
I have an 87 with a 700r4 recently rebuilt and not so long after I can't get it into park. I called the shop back and they said there isn't any adjustment on these transmissions and so it must be a worn shifter but they don't cover anything outside of the transmission. They said they'd take a look at it but if they are right and they can't do anything about it then I don't want to make the 2 hour drive for nothing. Any suggestions??

..... Time to replace the shift cable ..... the end ferrule has become uncrimped allowing the black plastic sheath/housing to move independently of the clevis on the cable itself ............

I got under the car and gave a little push on the shifter lever and it clicked a notch into park so does that still sound like I need a replacement cable?

..... Not if you do that every time you park your car ... might get a bit tricky on any kind of an incline though .............

You need to adjust the position of the pin in the shift lever on the transmission. There is no adjustment at the shifter.
Remove the shifter cable from the shift lever on the trans.
Put the shifter in Park.
Loosen the 15mm nut on the back of the shift lever pin.
Move the shift lever on the trans to Park.
Adjust the pin in the slot until the eye of the shifter cable slips on the pin.
Tighten the nut, but not too tight (you will break the cable if the trans slips out of Park -- you don't need to ask me how I know this).
Move the shifter to 1st gear.
Tighten the 15mm nut until it's tight.
This is what the shift lever looks like (sorry for the mess -- this is what my trans looked like after I took it out of my car -- I did clean the lever for the pic):
Remove the shifter cable from the shift lever on the trans.

If it is still doing it after the adjustment, then it's the shifter cable. By taking the trim around the shifter off, you should be able to see if the sheathing came undone. I just got done replacing mine.

Actually just got in from adjusting it and it still does it. Guess I'm looking at replacing that cable. Any suggestions on what cable to get?

Swap the cable, happened to me in the past.
You can always get AC Delco cable from your local dealer.

Everyone that has used this cable says it works great. Fits just like the original...Cheaper then a stock cable..You can have it shipped or pick it up at the store.......WW

Thanks everyone for your help! Thought I'd update to let you all know how things went. I ended up going with the pioneer from autozone and it fit just fine except theres been a couple times where the cable jumps off of the shifter because it comes in contact with one of the two bolts that holds the park switch on. Anyone ever have this happen? It pops off in either reverse or neutral (when it's at the highest point).

Definitely. At least it's not under the car so its an easy fix lol. I'm thinking about bending that bar that holds the park switch a bit so it's out of the way.
