Default 1986 Emergency Brake Shoes Replacement Inquiry

When I bought the car last year, my mechanic replaced all 3 of the e-brake cables. Even with the cable adjusted correctly, and the shoes adjusted nice and tight, the e-brake will not hold the car from rolling. I'm guessing that something has frozen up inside the rotor, and probably needs replacing at this point. When I pull up on the lever, the cable is probably just flexing vs. actually moving the parking brake shoes.

Car is a 1986 convertible with the 4+3 transmission. Question is, is it difficult to replace the shoes? My main concern is getting the large nut off that holds the rotor on. Do you need an air gun to remove it, or can you just hold the brake pedal down, and use a large breaker bar? I replaced many GM rear drum brake systems in the past, and just wanted some feedback on how difficult of a job it really is. I'll probably order the whole e-brake kit from Eckler's or Mid America, etc. Any feedback is appreciated........

Reagrds, Chris

Chris, You don't need to remove that nut to remove the rotor.

Ray: Thanks. So after removing the rear caliper, the rotor should be removed like any "normal" rotor?

And the shoe replacement is the same as any drum style brake setup

And as with any normal drum style brake setup, if you have them adjusted as tight as you'd mentioned, you may need to back off the adjustor in order to get the rotor to pull off easily.

It's actually in the front on these rotors as opposed to the rear like many other GM cars of that era...........
