Default Federal 595 Evo 255 45 R17 on 9.5" wheels

Federal 595 Evo 255 45 R17 on 9.5" wheels replaced Kumho MX KU15 275 40 R17 98Y tires. They are slightly narrower but much more comfortable for the kind of imperfections (uneven road surface) here in Turkey.

My 89 has FX3 suspension and even in Tour setting, the ride with Kumho MX was jarring. Federal 595 Evo made a big difference. These are labeled C for wet performance for the new European Tire Labeling system.

I am wondering if you have tried 255 45 R17 size tires on all four and what you think. Federals run a little wider than other brands, these tires are almost 265/40 R17 wide (ideal tire for 9.5' wheel) and 285/40 R17 tall.

Works for me. I've never tried Federals, but have been tempted.

I've used 255/45R17 all around on 9.5" wheels in the past. I currently have 255/50R17 Riken Raptors all around.

I see no issues with a 255 tire on 9.5" wheel, just wish there more tires available in 255/50R17. I like this size for the taller sidewall for the gearing influence and the extra ground clearance.

As you are aware, the section width and actual widths vary among tires so not much difference between many 255 and 275 tires if you can get over the bigger is better mindset.

I am happy to hear that even taller tires work OK. In my case, there were plenty of 245/45 tires to choose from but 255/45 choices were more limited.

On the local market, there are many 17" Chinese knock off BBS and other 10" wide rims which are used with 225 tires on E36 BMWs etc giving the streched look. I did not want a streched look so I did not consider 245 tires.

I considered 255/40 R17 Federal 595 SS (Super Steel) which is a favorite with the drifting community world wide (as i am not a drifter....strike 1). Ground clearance is extremely important with speed bumps, and road constructions here in Istanbul. I noticed that many cars come from the factory with "Rough Road" suspensions with taller springs to cope with the challenges. That was strike 2.

I searched online and noticed a Federal employee not recommending 595 Evo for drifting and that made me decide on 595 Evo over 595 SS(Strike 3)

Kumho MX had great grip but I was never sure what would happen if it slipped. With Federal 595 Evo, I can break grip on a corner but it is more predictable so I can drive more playfully. Comfort is way up, the car drives more like a 1970s tight sprung (leaf spring rear) Chevrolet Nova rather than a chariot.
