Default drip tab/cam lift/rocker question

I'm going back to the stock valve covers while I have the intake pulled off. Since my cam is only .480 lift and I'm using the Comp Cams 1.52 roller tip rockers, can I get away with leaving the drips tabs on or do I need to break them off?

DON'T BREAK them off. Many that have tried this ended up having the tab break out part of the cover itself. Grind or cut them off. You might have to also go with a taller gasket.

I believe it! I did that on the covers for my 84 due to the aluminum roller rockers and cringed at every "tink".

I believe with the comp cams roller tip rockers but standard ball socket you can leave the drip tabs in place.

Tried to get them on today and no go with the drip tabs in place. I'm going to grind them out tomorrow and try again.

Here's little tip that will answer your question and relieve the stress.

Set the cover on the head (no bolts)
Turn the engine over by hand and observe if the cover moves.
If it does, add a gasket and try again.

My CC cam has a .450 lift with 1.6 that didn't move without a gasket.

You can also try grinding off some of the tab rather than breaking of the entire thing.

I used a Dremel tool and a small cutting wheel to cut mine off. I went with Crane roller rocks. Mag valve covers are quite brittle so I wouldn't just break them off.

My covers won't reach the gasket rail by about as much distance as the height of the drip tabs. The covers are the same height as the aftermarket ones that have been on there, so I can only think it's the tabs interfering.

I was test fitting on the drivers side and didn't see that the front of the cover was hung up on the air pump bracket. Once it was down all the way it still felt like the tabs were hitting.

I used some long wood screws and a big hunk of 4x12 to hold down the covers while I snapped off the tabs - it worked great. To clarify, I put cardboard between the board and the upside down valve cover, then used the long screws through the retaining holes to hold the cover tightly to the board. Then I snapped the tabs off.
