Default 1985 steering column - is that spring needed?

Hi everybody,

I rebuild the steering column of my wifes '85 C4 and am confused about a spring. Someone installed a custom steering wheel so unfortunately I don't have all parts.

I took a look at the Shop Manuals of 1985 and 1988 which was a little confusing. The '88 manual does show a spring and a retainer which are not shown by the '85 manual.

Does anyone know if I need this spring/retainer for the '85 and what their function is?

Primary function of the spring is 'horn function'. So long as you've a working horn OR aren't concerned about the horn then there's no reason to be concerned. You didn't ask but you've got it circled, that retainer is for the steering wheel nut on all tilt & telescoping columns regardless of year. Does the after-market wheel still allow the t & t function?

Your images should offer substantial help to ALL who have questions regarding horn button/contact installation correctly. I doubt that many/most pay little attention to the 'how to'.
