Default 1994 Transmission problems

I've been having problems with my 4L60 E transmission. At first it wasn't going into overdrive. Now I'm only getting 1st and 2nd. I checked the fluid, it was right under the crosshairs. So I added some, took it for a ride and I'm still having the same problem. Any thoughts on my problem?

Did you check the trans fluid level while the engine was running? When was the last time the fluid and filter were replaced? Also have you done any work around or near the throttle valve cable to the transmission? It could need adjustment or replacement

Probably burned up the 3/4 clutch pack. My guess is you need a rebuild.

yes I checked the fluid when it was hot and running. The fluid and filter was changed 3 years ago. Only put 8,000 miles on it since then.

The fluid is red and clear and doesn't smell burnt.

3-4 clutch is burned up. Take the filter out, break it open and unfold it. You'll find your 3-4 clutch in there. Could even be the forward clutch causing no 3-4. Seen it before even without burnt fluid.

Like I said, seen it before. 4th slowly went away, then 3rd. I guess the paper thin friction material on the clutches could hold in 1st (3.06) and 2nd (1.63), but not in 1.00 and .70.

I test drove it, I rebuilt it. Forward was worse than 3-4. Ran fine since the rebuild.

Thanks for the reply. Now it's time to take it to the transmission shop.

My problem seem to have corrected itself. Error code 28 came up which is manifold pressure switch. I put a container of z max for transmissions in and drove it around the city. After about an hour, the trans finally went into 3 rd. Then I took it on the highway and after about a half hour it went into overdrive. My car was sitting for about a month for the winter. So I don't know if it just needed to be driven for a while to make the trans work properly or if the z maz helped. After the summer, I will have the trans serviced. But so far so good.
