since the water pump is cam-driven on LT's, you might as well go electric

Meziere seems to be popular

You can easily notice how an LT1 will revv easier from idle with the mezzziere. top end accelerates quicker too... the redline hits much faster. Add pullies as well and you have an LT1 that has virtually no drag from accessories.

No dyno, but everyone familiar with LT1 that has driven/sat in it has said "What did you do to this car?!?" Seems to run much smoother. After I installed it, my wife drove it about 100' (she has a great butt-o-meter) and said "What did you do to the car".

Addtional PRO - car runs 10 degrees cooler in normal operation. In another post someone did some calculations that the HD Meziere pumped the same volume of water as the stock pump at 4K RPM. If you spend a lot of time above 4K you will probably need a bigger radiator as even the stock pump is cavatating badly. Cruizing across the desert at 120MPH the temps held at 224.

Other PROs - you can run the coolant while the engine is off, if you add a switch to the fans you can drop the engine temp really quickly.

You can purge air out of the system without running the engine.

my car has a 160 thermostat... but i havnt changed the chip so the fans coem on early. with the mezziere even on a warm day with a lot of idling it wont go over 188'f. While driving its usually around 177. nice and cold

Does the LT1 and LT4 have the same water pump? I am considering doing this to my car since I have about 60,000 on my current water pump.

Plus:
Cools faster as it flows more coolant
Doesn't sap the engine of power through having the motor power the pump

Minus
More to go wrong(my experience is that electronics fail much sooner than mechanical devices, especially aftermarket)
High cost($300 hp for 5-10hp)
weighs more

I would stick with mechanical on a daily driver and consider the electric for a weekend warrior.

Meziere is only about $214 for the HD unless the price has gone up a good deal. You're right it does weigh more, but I think the weight is offset by the decrease in drag. You're right, electrical devices do tend to fail more often than mechanical, but it seems that the LT1 water pump was prone to failure anyway. Another pro is that if it quit working it won't puke on your opti when it goes.

The biggest drawback I can see out of the whole Meziere situation is that nobody has made a camber brace that will clear it, so that kinda sucks. I've been using mine as a daily driver for about 10,000 miles so far and haven't had the first problem out of it, that doesn't mean I never will, but I think it's worth it. If it died today I'd replace it with another one, it just makes life so much easier when trying to flush / purge the cooling system.

For whoever asked, yes the LT4 uses the same pump as the LT1, so you can use the Meziere.
