Id85 I guess all engine rebuild start as a budget one but then they take off...I was reading what you have in yours are it looks great wish this one was a 406ci.
Agent 86 Im trying to make the most HP and TQ and still have it a good daily driver.
PonyH8R Im trying to do this engine for about $3000, Im doing all the work myself and my brother does all the machine work so that does not cost me that much, I got the block on Ebay for $400 it is a new ZZ4 block.

I had a budget once then I started building the motor. I think a budget is just theory because I have never seen one actualy work, a bit like cold fusion sounds good on paper. My idea was to build a stock LT1 and replace my X-fire motor :lolg: . A LT4 hotcam, ported heads/intake and oversize valves, electric water pump, headers, LT4 RRs, ECM programing, New injectors, 52mm TB, and the cost of rebuilding a LT1 compared to a normal SBC later poof no more budget.

Re: My budget engine rebuild..... (MrJay)
Head info
The heads are 128 Corvette Heads that have been ported on the intake and the exhaust, guides K-lined, Manley proflow stainless 1.94 intakes, 1.5 Manley exhaust. Pocket are cut for larger springs: Crane 1.420 dia dual springs PN#99893, 125# seat (1.812 installed height) and 325# open (1.272) Hardened guideplates. ARP rocker studs. The bowl has been reworked and stems contoured. The short radius has been blended and the intake ports expanded and matched to a Felpro 1205 (1.28 wide x 2.09 tall).
Intake... I dont know what I will use yet but the LT1 looks really good or the Stealth Ram.

Re: My budget engine rebuild..... (MrJay)
"Budget" I found a Callies 3.875 for $600 and thought I'd put together a "budget 396". Found a 4bolt block for $400 and thought I was on a roll. Extra set of heads and intake $300 (rolling on). Then I thought the heads needed a full over with bigger valves $1200. Might as well get some good pistons, rods, and bearings $1500. Hey that new Dynaspark will help out $500. How about a Canton oil pan $200 (used). Might as well throw in anARP head stud set $118. Stan tells me I need an electric waterpump $220. Yea, that ATI dampner looks good $459. Sure, it's going to need some nice stuff for the exhaust, EM 1 3/4 coated headers $678, B&B 3inch with X-pipe $900. Machine work on the block $500. Man, those chrome valve covers will look nice $245. Almost forgot, cam, injectors, roller rockers, flex plate, tranny pan, copper header gaskets, plugs , wires, thermostat, lifters, pushrods, guide plates $1300. A little powdercoating $150. { I think the calculator jsut exploded}. Well, I think you get the idea. "Budget" Hopefully the  when it's in and running will make it worth while. :steering:

Re: My budget engine rebuild..... (MrJay)
Ramrod92 I know that the small parts add up when you start to buy them, $10 here and $10 there.
Your engine looks really nice and it sounds like you are going to have strong one too, you have a lot of good part there some that I wish I had... :D
I think you will be happy when you start running it.

Why did you powerder coat the lifter valley/timing chain area? is there some kind of performance advantage?

Chris, the valley and the front area are painted. The machine shop did that. I had the intake, waterpump housing and the timing cover pwodercoated. :steering:

I don't see clearancing work. Not a stroker? What CID? You'll be happy with the cam. I had something very similar and it worked good for daily driver.
My new engine also had the lifter valley painted by the builder. Supposedly so the oil runs back to the pan quicker? I put a few hundred miles on it and took the intake back off and noticed the paint was wearing off. it's in the filter or running around the oil huh?
I have asked a few engine builders on this and either they are really for it or really against it. One of those heated debate things like which oil to use in a ZF6 or miniram or superram
