Default Timing Chain Decision Cloyes or GM Extreme Duty Help I need to decide!!!

OK so I was planning on reusing my LT4 timing chain, but with the cam in place and new heavier valve springs I have decided at the last minute I need to upgrade or least go with new chain.

So I figure the GM Extreme Duty at Summit for $239 is way to go EXCEPT it is on back order for about 9 more days.

Summit cross referenced to Cloyes CLO-9-3151 which shows as a replacement for LT1/LT4 at $343. I also found on my own a Cloyes CLO-9-9100 which is described as heavy duty LT1, also $343.

So Cloyes is $110 more, but it is available now, about 1/2 hour away.

So what do I do, buy one of the two Cloyes, if so which one. Are they better than the GM or just more money. I still might find the GM unit at Pace or somewhere else, but just not sure which way to go now.

Help!!!

Bud, I always used Cloyes double roller timing chains in all my past motors - including the few 406s I raced. I NEVER had any problems what so ever.

I am not familiar with the GM product or if Cloyes makes one for our motors, but in my car, I'd use Cloyes.

Apparently Cloyes doesn't have a website, I am trying to figure out what the two chain sets are that Summit has in stock...?? Worth the plus $100 if so which one of the two??

Thanks Chris

CLO-9-3151 Original True timing set,Chevy 1/2in pitch LT1,LT4,L99 1995-up $343.39 $343.39

CLO-9-9100 Timing Set "Heavy Duty" SB Chevy "LT-1" $343.39 $343.39

This is what I find from Summit

My understanding is that Cloyes makes the GMPP extreme duty timing set.

Have you tried to call Chris at Superior to see if they have the extreme duty in stock?

Why not go with a Meziere pump for a bit over $200 then you can go with a 3145 Cloyes (reg, SBC type) for about $80. Plus pick up a few free ponies with less engine drag.

The water pump is already part of my upgrade.

If that's the case then you have no need for those expensive LT1-4 specific timing sets. A regular small block double roller will work great for a fraction of the cost. It's what I run. I'm pretty sure that's the right number I gave you earlier. Someone will verify I hope.

Corvette Kid NC, thanks for help

I found Cloyes site, it is somewhat helpful

9-3145 is original True for 1985 up sb with factory roller cam. 9-3151 is same for LT1 and 9-3150 is same for LT4. All are $343 at Summit

I can not believe it, Summit doesn't carry 9-3150, guess that is why they said 9-3151 which they do carry

Chris at Superior probably has the chain in stock...my cost just a month or two ago was $233.

Cloyes does make the GMPP part...talked with Cloyes directly for this info...

Something's wrong here. I just went out in the garage and looked at the box mine came in and it is indeed a 9-3145. But I only paid $90 for it at my local speed shop just a couple of months ago and I've seen them even cheaper online. I've got to check this out!

Just checked Summit's site, hope this link works.
http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...oyes&x=17&y=12

$79.95 is the price I saw.

Yes, it worked. Go to page 4.

I've got the Cloyes True Double Roller timing chain on mine, cost me about $70. I bought it used from a forum member (used, being he put it on the car but never ran it)

You can buy this chain brand new from Jegs for $79.99, I'm sure Summit has it even cheaper. Jegs part number is 220-9-3145

BTW, you'll have to plug the pump drive hole in your timing cover. Some people have them welded shut. I didn't want to do that but couldn't find a core plug to fit the odd size. I used JB Weld and plugged it with a half dollar. I turned it to where the eagle shows because I couldn't have a Democrat's face on my car...........

I bought a spare cover and had it welded up, then powder coated. Looks like it was supposed to be that way.

OK I am really confused now. You are right, but scroll down the page to the 9-3151 for LT1/LT4, it is $343.

What is the difference?????

The one specifically for the LT1/LT4 will retain the provision for driving the mechanical water pump, which you don't need if you're going electric.

That is worth $260????

That is nuts!!!! But I have seen stupider things

Also it turns out, per Summit, that Cloyes no longer makes the 9-3150 for LT4, but just the 9-3151 to be used for both.

Sounds like what I really need is the 9-3145

Thanks Nathan

Keep in mind that typically in order to use the cheaper (cost wise) timing chains you either have to custom machine the crankshaft reluctor ring or remove the crankshaft reluctor ring. The reluctor ring is unique to '96 LT1/4 OBD II cars.
