I need to replace my opti-spark unit '92 Lt-1. Any recommendation on new vs. "reman". Huge difference in price.

Go to Sam Taylor Chevrolet they have the best prices:

www.samtaylor.com

I don't recommend a reman unit. Chances are A1 Cardone rebuilt it and I have had nothing but bad luck with their workmanship. Besides thats a not a job I wan't to do again once its done

I should say so! The local dealer here in Iowa wants $473 clams for one. That guy at Taylor in Florida only wants $229 clams for the supposed same exact thing.

How is that possible anyway? Less than half price!

Thanks for the quick response on this issue. It appears that Sam Taylor has a vented unit for $229 and non-vented unit for $319. Of course the 92 LT1 uses a non-vented unit. Only ever convert a non-vented LT1 to a vented LT1?

lots of people convert to the vented unit. Its cheaper in the long run and supposedly the vented units are much more durable. Need a 95 timing cover, 95 opti and the vent kit for the hoses. Only thing im not sure about is the vent kit going onto a 92-3, i dont think the intake duct has the nipple to plug the vent hoses on... so not familiar with that...

Here's an option. You can replace the distributor with a solid state version for less than a replacement distributor.

I'm in your shoes. 92LT1 6 speed. Opti on last legs.

I looked at a new one. For some reason, the early non-vented opti is more expensive than the later model. I don't know why.

So, the options are to convert to the newer style, buy original, go with the dynaspark, or the coil on plug LS1 conversion.

I am going with the dynaspark. Perhaps not as good as the LS1 conversion - but it gets the job done.

It's going to run me $609 in just the opti. Not cheap. I'm a normal driver who doesn't race. My goal is stock performance and longer service life.

I've been watching it for a year before mine took a dive.

don't forget the cams and cam gears are different, and the late opti will not fit in an early cam:

ask me how i know?
what i did was ground the pin on the back of the late opti so it was short enough to fit, has worked for 2 summers now, so i guess it's ok.
