I bet its one of these two that OEM's the can that K&N puts their sticker on and marks up the price. But how to find out?

As far as oil filters go, K&N (and most other major brands) are manufactured by a variety of small shops. The base components of the filters ie: paper, are supplied for "assembly" only. My Uncle owns one such shop. He "assembles" the filters and ships them without the canisters. He simply does the forminig and crimping.
Fuel filters he does complete. I'm not as sure about air filters but I think they fall along the same line as oil filters in that the "special" paper is supplied and the product is made to spec.

Here's a link to an oil filter study that was done some years ago.

It's interesting reading but I have not seen an update to this study. Even though most filters are made by only two or three manufacturing companies, some individual brands still have their own specifications for filter media and design.

The mfg info on the box is:
K&N Engineering, Inc
P.O. box 1329
Riverside, CA92502, USA
and
John Street
Warrington, Cheshire WA2 7UB England
So it looks like they are a British company with a dist. or branch in SOCAL.

As far as FRAM goes, I've seen that they have a premium one on the shelf for more than double the $ but I wonder if that is even worth it? I know I'm going to get the K&N or stock one from now on.

Why K&N. I couldn't resist.
I've been using the AC Delco's UPF-52 on my LT1. It had a great write up in one of those testing companies. You can find it in the archieves, I think.
