Default Change oil (?)

Okay, I hope this question is not entirely idiotic, but I just bought a 96 LT4 Collector's Edition around 3 months ago. It had 28k miles on the clock when purchased and 28,600 once I got the car home (after I picked it up). The first thing I did was have the car safety inspected and routine mainanence. I had the oil changed with Mobil 1 as called for in the owners manual and a Mobil 1 oil filter.

My question = This morning, my change oil light came on. I have 29,856 miles on it now. Is this light set on a predetermined timer to go off every so often, or is my oil contaminated and needing changed? What would cause oil to need to be changed after only 1200 miles? Or is there something wrong with my ride?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Chris

Chris they probably didn't reset the monitor after the change.

Next time your in the car, turn ignition on but not start, press the Eng/Met button then again within 5 seconds press it again. Then press and hold the Guages button the Change Oil lamp will start flashing when it stops it has been reset.

A good rule of thumb I picked up from a GM powerplant engineer was to change the oil and filter the first day of each season. Easy to remember and it generally occurs about the time the monitor notification alerts. For those who drive the average of 12K per year that divides it into 4 and means they would be changing about every 3K which is fairly good.

Which reminds me its time for an oil change since its officially Fall.

Also, with synthetic oil, they are not as prone to hydrocarbon breakdown. So they will last longer beween changes.

Finally, DRIVE IT MORE!!!!!!!!!!!! You will be a happier man for it!

You have all the info you need above... It's just the light, not the all.

As for the Mobil 1 - I change mine on my LT4 every 5k. There are some who will say I'm not doing right, and in their mind, it's true. On a chemical level, though, I don't agree. It's just a fact that synthetics last longer, therefor you don't have to change them as often. I would even go so far as to say that 5k mile intervals is early, but I put low miles on my car, so it only ends up being changed no more than twice a year (if that). I feel that that's a fair "preventative" investment on my part to keep my car running well into its (and my) old age.

Congrats on your purchase, and see ya' on the road!!!
