You scrape oil up ward instead of back down toward the crankcase.

Everyone calls the second ring a second compression ring. However that's not really what it's for. The purpose of the second ring (Napier in this case) is oil scraping.

In the real world if the combustion gasses get by the first ring, we want them to keep going all the way to the crank case. It's a big reason for a larger ring gap on th second ring vs the top. You see what happens if the gasses get caught in between the second and first ring and ring flutter happens. Ring flutter is not just bad on the rings, you will lose power because the compression ring can't seal during the combustion event.
