Default Racing Fuel and Octane Boost

What are the positive and negative effects of each?

So, I've been thinking about trying some higher octane fuel and wanted to see if anyone has done so. Want to make sure there aren't any ill-effects.

Well, the common wisdom here on CF is that the octane boosters you see in the auto parts stores are pretty worthless. The chemical Torco supposedly works pretty well. Race gas, as long as it is unleaded, won't hurt. However, unless you are getting KR (Knock Retard) or pinging, it won't help, either. Check in the FI/Nitrous section of the forum. There is more discussion of this in there.

What octane is and does is misunderstood by many. Octane in itself does not increase horsepower. Unless your car's engine has been modified (higher compression ratio, etc.) such that it requires a higher octane than the stock LS1/LS6, you'll be wasting your money. In fact, too high an octane for a given compression ratio can have a detrimental effect on an engine's performance. Some racing fuels, which are high octane fuels, may also contain lead which can cause harm to your stock engine and damage the catalytic converters.

Here are a few links to some web pages that speak to what octane is and does:

What is octane?

What does octane mean?

Hope this helps.

When at the track I run ~103 octane, but I have a high-compression C5R-427. On a stock engine you are wasting $$$.

You might want to look at this as an alternative. A little pricey.

Interesting, anyone try this? It doesn't say performance anywhere.

Unless you are having knock issues, etc, you will see no gain and hence wasting precious $$$. Sunoco 94 octane is more than you will ever need for a stocker.

A few things to think about:

driving more at WOT or above 3000 RPMS so the computer can learn
tuning for such driving then doing it.

Most ppl who go to a road track for the weekend find their cars drive much better after buring all the crap and carbon out of the engine from slow city and highway driving.

Good Luck
