Default 3.42 Gears to 390s or 410s?

When i replace my clutch i was thinking about changing gear ratio from 3.42 to either 3.90 or 4.10. Cost wise it would add at least another thousand bucks onto the bill to do the gears with the clutch at that time. The benefit is faster excelleration, but a loss in MPG.What ratio should i go with, the car is used mostly on the street?

If it were my car, I would get 4.10s if I was keeping the engine mostly stock. If you are planning some engine mods, you could scale back your rear ratio choice based on your horsepower goals. My goal is FI (500ish rwhp), so I'm sticking with the 3.42 for now.

4.10s without a doubt, unless you plan on going forced induction later.

I went with 4.10's when my car was mostly stock (345 rwhp after tune). It was the best mod ever and well worth the money.

I have since went to heads and cam and now at 425 RWHP. I wished that I would have gone with 3.90's now, but I still run a 11.879 in the quarter. Problem is that I top out of rpm's at the big end of the track. I will just change tire size to accomplish a little change of gear to accomplish a quicker and faster run.

And as for gas mileage, you won't notice the difference on the street. Most of the time at 75 MPH, I cruise in 6th at 1800 rpm. Still get 26 mpg average.

No doubt the best "bang for the buck" mod you can do. As long as you don't go too crazy with adding HP they should be perfect. I have them with all bolt on stuff, long tube headers, magnaflow system, Vararam and a tune by CoW, car runs great.

These cars should have come from the factory with 3.90's. They are a much better gear set whether you are stock or 500+ like mine.

Just like them, I went with the 3.90's and love them. the gas mileage only went down about 2 MPG. I have 450 HP though

With your mods I'd absolutely go with 4.10s. If you plan on FI or a really aggressive HC setup you'd probably be better off with 3.90s or even 3.73s depending on your intent.

My car is similar to yours mod-wise and I went with 4.10s and am currently doing this a lot. I also still get 26-27 mpg on the highway. The difference in mpgs is almost negligible.

I've got a 2002 A4 with 2.73 stock gears and practiced a full out launch the other day. It spun all the way thru 2nd and I finally had to let off or would have lost it after hitting 2nd.

Now I'm imagining 3.90 or 4.10 gears. Yikes.

Are we trying to burn rubber or go faster? Serioulsy, how could you keep the tires on the road with 4.10 gears on even a stock Vette?

The gear ratios in the A4 are higher than that of a MN6 in first and second, plus you loose that second overdrive with the A4. The 3.90s and 4.10s are generally considered impractical/too high for the A4 guys(though some have them). That is why the majority of people opt for the 3.42s or 3.73s at the most.

3.90s and 4.10s work great for the MN6 players, you just need good tires and some skill.

Yes, I agree here. All the comments and suggestions were for the manual tranny guys.

An A4 does not need this high of gear.

As stated above, get some good tires and you won't be able to spin as good as the runflats (I assume) that you have now.

Put on some sticky tires for the track and you won't get much spin at all on a "full out launch"

No down side for me. I got 4:10's and did not notice any loss of gas mileage. Take off is easier and no drive train noise like the stock 3:42's cause. I still get 27-30 mpg on the hwy and 24-25 locally. I do have non run flats (GoodYear GSD3's) which are sticker and keep the launches under control.
