Default dreaded column lock question

Ok so explain the column lock for me please. I noticed that on my A4 vert that the steering wheel still turns when the car is off and the key is out of the ignition. Does this mean that the column lock has already been bypassed and i am safe?

Just to clarify, the early A4s were also affected because a column lock was fitted. A4s delivered after 2000 did not have the column lock system as GM got around the legal requirement to fit one on the basis that the park function was adequate.

The TSB below shows the models affeced by the original recall (4006A). There have been 2 subsequent recalls (B&C) to try to fix the issue.

In your case with a 99 that doesn't lock when you shut it down, you will have had some or all of the recalls fitted. Generally 4006C, which removes the lock plate) seems to be an improvement and from what members say may even work. The earlier mods were useless and cause no end of problems.

If you check and find you dont have 4006C, I'd still fit a Column Lock Bypass and then you can rest easy.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I am going to pull the knee panel today and see if the relay is installed. I dont want to get stuck somewhere with a car that is locked.

Thanks
Steve
