Default Road rage....... Think twice

This just happened in my small upstate NY town. I grew up in Bainbridge and now live in Afton. The two town centers are about 5 miles apart, and between the two, there is one traffic light. So needless to say, this is "small town USA". If you think this kind of stuff only happens in the big city, you're fooling yourself. All I can say is the next time someone cuts you off in traffic, or whatever "stupid" maneuver the other guy makes, think twice before you "retaliate".

***Update 4/5/16***

I was asked to update this when the trial happened. The accused was just convicted of murder at his bench trial. For those interested, here is the link.

They're just wrapping up a trial on a road rage killing here.

That is the truth. I have my concealed carry permit and I never go anywhere without it.

I won't be a helpless victim, neither will my family.

Not going to be much help during a road rage incident. If you brandish or shoot a gun during an altercation on the road, it could be you going to jail. There was a case here a few years ago where two drivers had a problem on the road and they both started shooting at each other. They both went to jail. Funny.

Just be careful so you don't shoot a member of your family. There has been a lot of that happening lately.

I hear you. Self defense and stand your ground. IMO, when you carry, there is no such things as road rage, and you never pull a weapon unless there is NO other option.

Doesn't have to be road rage even. In Tampa someone shot his neighbor for dog poo on yard. Was in the paper less than a week ago.

This will only get worse

OP: when the trial is over update the thread please.

...and just like the guy who shot the man texting his babysitter in one of our local Tampa area movie theaters (before the movie even started), some of them are ex-cops!

Sad that it even got to the point of a shooting.

I agree that this was a sad case of what can happen with road rage, but what do you do when someone is actively trying to run you off the road, or at least trying to slam into the side of your car?

I was heading home one afternoon after visiting my daughter and ran into a massive traffic jam. At one point I was behind an F150 pickup that kept braking for no apparent reason (he had multiple car lengths open in front of him), and doing so in a way that I did not feel safe behind him. When the opportunity presented itself I got into the next lane over and moved up several cars so the truck was multiple cars behind me. The next thing I knew this guy was beside me and attempting to slam his truck into my car. We were in bumper to bumper traffic so there wasn't much I could do other than swerve to avoid him when I could. I tried to slow down to let him just go by, but he slowed down as well and kept trying to run into me, so the first chance I got I floored it, which luckily happened to be right at the end of the traffic jam, and hit triple digit speed (in Mexico) to get away from the nutjob. Even so, he kept trying to catch up to me until I exited the freeway.

You should have flashed your handgun at him. That would have scared him off.(sarcasm)

Will do Details are still coming in, but it's believed to have started all over tailgating. After the incident, the shooter ( who is a retired NYC cop ) jumped in his car and drove 4 miles up the road and turned himself in at the local State Police Barracks.

Didn't have one with me at the time, besides, that's illegal in Texas, and he probably had one of his own with him.

What's happening to our society? Everything I knew and grew up with doesn't exist anymore. Seems like people wake up in the morning and instead of taking a vitamin, they take stupid pills. If this were PR&C I would tell you what's happened.

One of the MANY situations where a gun is of no use in protecting you.

I believe the media, movies and video games have something to do with it.

Which? That I didn't have one with me, that it's illegal to flash one while driving, or the fact that he probably had one of his own with him?

The world has changed, many people feel more alienated an unhappy than ever, and its best to do everything possible to avoid contact with people who seem even the slightest bit irrational or angry. When someone pulls up next to me in anger or honks at me, I just hold my hand up in apology and get on with my day. I've got nothing to prove at this stage of my life, and I kind of assume that aggressive people are capable of much worse than I'm prepared to contend with.
