Default 70+ rwhp/9mph trap speed gain from cam & UD pulley only + tuning on A4 C5

Ok, this is the last I will post on this particular cam install, but many of you continue to PM or email me requesting more details of Scoundrl's cam-only gains. Recap: I installed a custom grind 229/235 113lsa cam and UD pulley into Ken's 04 A4 2.73 stock TC coupe a couple weeks ago. Prior to the install he had a Vararam and cat back and was running 106mph traps and dyno'd 315rwhp. I did the install then I tuned the snot out of it in Speed Density mode. Since the install we've been to the strip to check out the gains: he ran 115+mph this past weekend and dyno'd 375+rwhp but AH/TC cut car off at 5400rpm, just when cam was starting to make its power!!! So, no telling where his peak power is, I am guessing close to 390rwhp or more. So, we picked up upwards of 70-80rwhp+ and a solid 9 mph in trap speed. This is through stock LS1 heads and the stock 4 catalytic exhaust system!! Car idle's pretty good at 650rpm but I plan some more fine-tuning to really bring it in. We may end up with an Idle speed of 700rpm, still low enough to avoid too much cam idle push most see with big cams and high idle speeds in stock-TC'd A4 cars. Once we put a looser TC in it I plan to put the idle to 600rpm to really get that cam lope going!! Ken seems to like it...

So, I am installing a little bit bigger cam into another A4 here shortly, but the customer already has Patriot heads, LT headers on. So the results should be very interesting.

Ok, dead horse beaten to death. Ken- you got a beast of a car. Imagine what ported heads, headers, gears and TC would do. Greg Nate, you're next!!! Cam should be here in a few weeks. Adam Bailey (killaz), you gonna pick up a h/c package for me to install and tune for you??!

All 4 of them, to be exact. I had to weld an accessory O2 bung in front of the pass pup cat so I could properly tune the car. Anyway, a freak car we got here, you agree?!?!? Ken's loving the fact that he can smoke all his rice EVO and WRX buddies with a cam & pulley only C5.

What ET did the car run ? That's a decent trap speed for a cam only A4 with stock maniflods and cats , there was a forum member who ran 11.80's at 115-116 in a bone stock motor 99C5 A4 with T/C , gears and headers with cats , stock heads , stock cam .

That was Artie you're thinking of. IIRC, he ran a high 11.6 @ 115.

I believe TC is referencing Torque Converter (not trac ctrl).

Actually it was two A-4 C5's trapping 115-116 with stock heads , stock cam , it was Artie and Mike Carr .

I am pretty sure this one would have hit 400. It was just starting to make good power when it crapped out! Since you have a 6 speed I'd go bigger.I'd go as big as I could w/out fly cutting it, I bet you'd be needing a cage with just a cam intall.

It's a custom grind Comp cam custom grind 229/235 .585/.595 113lsa +4 XER profile. I wish this was a 6 speed, I'd have gone a lot bigger.

Before cam/pulley/tuning = 13.0@106, 315rwhp dyno
After install = 12.6@115.4, 375+rwhp (Traction control kicked in @ 5400 and killed the run. Cam was still pulling very hard. Hit 375rwhp at 5400 so I figure dam close to 400rwhp, maybe more? unreal).
His small ET gain vs huge trap speed gain is, of course, indicative of the stock 2.73 gears and stock Converter. With the power Ken is generating right now, if he had 3.73s and 3600SS stall and TransGo shift kit, car would be deep in the 11's. Not bad for a cam only car. Then add the LT headers, CNC heads, no cats; car would be a daily 10 second driver. However, Ken is not building a drag racer, so we wont be going this drastic on the gears and TC.

RJ / Gen 3 MS

The cam is a custom grind of my specs, but basically 229/235 .585/.595 113.5 +4 on XER Comp Cam.
