Default Different Oil Filters Affect on Oil Pressure?

Just wondering - Do different brand oil filters have any affect on oil pressure? I imagine not.

Not enough to worry about, that's for sure.

Of course they do.
When you buy a filter that catches smaller particles, the filter media is more restrictive and has increased pressure drop across the filter.

I use the regular WIX filters on my Z06.
Even when I use ACDelco filters, I use the standard filter and not the UPF "ultra" filters.

UPF was one of the worst and the guy I have check my used oil told me to get rid of it.

I guess a K&N would fall into this category?

Better filters tend to have finer media but more of it, i.e., if there is more surface area even though the media itself may be more restrictive it may not inhibit flow.

Oil filters do affect oil pressure, but only during a cold start. The reason is that there are other parts of the oil system (bearings) that provide more restriction than the filter. Therefore, at steady state, the oil pressure is determined mainly by these restrictions.

I too, changed from the premium DELCO UPF-44 to WIX oil filters. My cold oil pressure increased 10-15 psi.

Remember, GM ran 200,000 mile tests on the LS1 engine with regular DELCO oil filters.

The reason I ask is that I've got 25-30 lbs. pressure at idle when hot (200* + oil temp.) I have 40 lbs. @ cruising RPM's. I know that's all fine but thought maybe I could boost the hot idle pressure with a different filter. 5-30W Mobile 1.

my last engine LS6 was built a little loose, it also had a high flow oil pump. I found that both the K&N and Mobil 1 filters gave a few pounds more pressure.

Try the Castrol 0W-30, the viscosity at 100 degrees C is 12.1 Cst whereas the Mobil-1 is 10 Cst. Mobil-1 is actually very close to a 20 weight oil.

After my heads / cam swap I ran some Mobile 1 10W-40 which helped with the valve train noise as well as the hot oil pressure. Switched back to the 5W-30 after adding Yella Terras which quieted down the valve train but the oil pressure suffered a bit. Maybe I'll try the Castrol 0W-30. I've sure been buying a lot of synthetic oil lately

Autozone had a deal going that included 5 quarts plus a K&N filter for around $28. Not sure if it is still going on but it saves a lot of money. I picked up two setups last weekend including a filter for the Vette and one for my daughter's Jeep.
