Default C5 power steering pulley removal

I bought a C5 front accessory drive but the p/s pulley came mangled. I bought a puller/press kit "Lisle 38850 Pulley Puller and Installer Tool Set." Is there a particular way of removing the pulley? I noticed a hex shaped opening.

Are there no instrucions? There should be something that fits in the groove around the nose of the pulley. Then a theaded part that pushes it off the shaft. The shaft is internally threaded and the tool screws into the shaft and another threaded arangement pushes the new pulley on. That hex opening had no bearing on anything when I did mine.

The PS pulley is a PITA to remove and install again. If you use the remover correctly via its instructions, you should have no trouble other than a long time to do the job. I didn't follow my instructions quite right and ended up trashing the pulley then having to take it to a machine shop to get the thing off. Fortunately a new one at the time was like $16. If you do damage it, try to get a new one with the holes through it. I heard the ones from the LS2 will work on the LS1 but please don't hold me to it.

I just did 3 days ago, installed C6 pulley as i hate C5 pulley. used combination wrench and need some muscle, you hear crack sound while taking off but dont be scare hold on keep going.

I have OTC PS pulley remover and installer both, search on amazon i bought it there last year, worked like a charm, replaced in less than 1/2 hr. Use oil on threads and do back n forth while using wrench.

Note: measure or visual inspection before taking off old pulley the distance or depth how much to install new one..thats it.

The pulley should be flush with the pump shaft when properly installed.

Yep, the installer I used stopped when they were flush.

Thanks guys. not trying to put one on just yet. Trying desperately to get the old one off! lol. I have heard good things about the tool I have, and following the limited instructions I have, everything was installed right. I will take a pic and show you what I am working or better yet failing with.

There is a pulley "knub" some where just waiting to be extricated with extreme prejudice

Instructions were sparse, but figured this was pretty much the setup. Unfortunately, it just won't budge. Maybe a 3/8th impact might help...hmmm

Wow, you are in a pickle! If you have access to someone with a tig welder you could have them add some material for the puller to hook onto. Also, a little heat on the pulley helps with pulling them off. Have to be careful not to over heat the shaft seal.

Hold it with some large Channel Locks to keep if from turning and use an impact. It'll come off.

I had the same thing happen, the edges of the pulley center ripped off so the puller didn't have anything to grab on to. I decided to buy a new pump rather than beating the crap out of the old one and possibly damaging it. For $100 or so for a new pump, it was worth it to me not to have to disassemble everything if the old pump was to fail after doing whatever would be necessary to get the center of the pulley off.

I guess I paid for piece of mind not having to worry about it with a new pump.

I got it from the stealership. I recommend you call around for pricing. Richie at Abel Chevrolet, Rio Vista, CA, or Gene Culley probably have the best prices.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

You know, mine was seemingly trashed like that and I was going to buy a new one as well for the same reasons, but I went with the cheap fix via a machine shop and all's good. BTW, my PS pump is still the OEM at now 325K miles. This repair action happened at 274K when I pulled the heads to replace all of the lifters and associated upper end items.

Ok, ok. I will take it in when I return from Myrtle Beach and see what happens. Anybody happen to have an extra starter lying around. I believe that got damaged when the stuff was being moved around in the garage.

Can anyone verify if the GM C6 Power Steering Pulley is plastic as well?
