Default symtoms of a bad motor mount?

on my 97, thinking one or both are bad, vibration at idle in gear (A4), vibration when turning right.

I'm not sure a big chunk of rubber can go bad.

If that were true, I would probably agree, however it's not just a big hunk of rubber. They ARE pretty durable overall, but they also contain a fluid in a chamber inside to suppress NVH.
As far as the purely mechanical side of things, I have not seen the internal design of them to know if there's some mechanical "locking" design to prevent serious engine movement in case of failure.

I do agree that more info would be helpful though.
