Like 8vette7 said, "Key specific information was documented by the factory at build time and GM dealerships have access to that information by VIN."
I don't know how looking on the internet would have helped them at all, to know which pellet to use?
I would insist they give me a refund for the 50 bucks, for the BS....

Thanks for the answer but I would like a more precise answer. Does specific information means that the information the dealer has is for the vats number and the shape of the key? And do more than one VIN number have the same vats number and same key shape?
Inquiring mind wants to know.

Obviously they do...otherwise they couldn't make a key that would work with the corresponding VIN...
Possibly they have a psychic that takes each request for a new key from said dealership and does his meditational, mental gymnastics and then sketches the shape on a piece of paper to be used as a template and chants the pellet # as some sort of mantra... just kidding

My bonded locksmith had to measure a keys resistance, buy the key then cut it from the VIN. So his knowledge at least was limited to the profile. Don't forget, you still need the FOB to match...

They're totally working that one for all they can get. As far as I know, GM does not charge the dealer to look up the key codes. As for the "internet", that's not completely false, seeing as they access their account through the internet.

For what it's worth, the dealership I use regularly hasn't charged me to look up any key codes. I guess they're not ALL bad...
