Default 2000 corvette output shaft leak

Hello all,

newbe here trying first post. If I'm doing anything wrong here please feel free to let me know!

Anyway have a 2000 c5 with manual trans, with 29,000. miles. Love the thing!

after 3 day trip parked in garage and noticed a silver dollar size oil spot on garage floor from back end drivers side under transmission.

After a bunch of online research it appears that it may be a output drive shaft seal? Apparently it's a common problem and GM even issued a service bulletin about it.

Anybody know anything? Cause, cost to repair, what I should do now, etc.

Any thoughts, experience with it, and or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a million,
Kevin

First thing I'd do is to determine what type of fluid it is. Gear lube, trans fluid or maybe even condensate coming from the exhaust flange.

Hey Carl,
Thanks for getting back to me,
Positive not condensate. Seen that often. No color in it it and heavy viscosity so pretty sure not trans fluid. Heavy weight hypoid oil with slightly dirty brown color is what it seems like. Manual trans but surprised it may contain Dextron 111 auto trans fluid?

Only owned it for a about six months so a little clueless with corvettes.

Thanks.

If it stinks, it's gear lube. Best thing to do is get underneath and do a visual to determine where it's coming from.

looks like coming from small housing bolted to trans/differential from which driver side axel comes out of to wheel.

Pretty sure it is your seal. It's not to bad of a job if your are mechanically inclined. You are basically just pulling the shaft out of the trans unit, replace the seal, and then putting the shaft back in. I think it cost me about $800 eight years ago. This will be a good time to verify the rubber boots are still good.

ps
Anybody know of any repair shops in San Francisco/ Bay Area that you could recommend that can do output shaft seal diagnosis/repair? Looks to be beyond my ability.
I should probably be posting this request somewhere else on this site. I'm brand new at this and pretty clueless. Will learn and try not to waste anyones time.

Thanks Again!!
