Default Gasoline Types and Opinions

I was just wondering if everyone would weigh in on their thoughts about Gasoline Grades. Assuming I am getting on the highway and driving from Virginia to Florida (as i am on Friday) what are the consequences of using 87 or 89 octane vs. 93. I've done this trip before when gas prices weren't as scary as they are now and using straight up 93 (Chevron to cure a gas gauge problem) I got around 31 mpg (driving around the speed limit with a few runs upwards of 150) I just wanted to see what everyone thought I could expect if I used something other than 93.

On another note, seeing as how there are no Chevron gas stations within a 100 miles of where I live. I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not Texaco (who owns Chevron) is as good at cleaning the fuel system.

In case anyone is lost regarding Chevron. I was experiencing a problem where my gas gauge would suddenly drop from 3/8 full to empty complete with check gauge and low fuel lights. Another member recommended I run a few tanks of Chevron 93 through the car. I did this and have not had the problem in a couple of months.

Anyway, all comments are appreciated.

Why use anything less that the highest octane that you can reasonably buy? We are driving pretty expensive cars and should be able to spend a few more cents per gallon to keep our cars running well. I don't have the gas guage problem - but my Vette doesn't run well on "cheap" premium gas. so I try to use Mobil, BP or Citgo premium gas. Lower octane fuels can cause spark knock which can damage your engine.

I can't imagine driving that great a distance and not jumping on it. And goosing it on 87-89 octane fuel is *not* a good idea. IMHO, if you can afford a Vette you can afford the fuel.

Cheers,

Mark

Wasn't really a cost question. More of a Tech question.

The car is mapped for 91and the weather is getting hotter. You are probably going to be in 6th at low revs which put some decent demands on the engine for grade changes. Not a good time to go cheap on the gas.

Buy a few bottles of Techron and add that during fillups. It is what Chevron makes/sells. It is the additive that seems to workon keeping the fuel gauge clean. When you are just cruising on interstate, 87 octane will work. engine has a knock sensor that computer receives info from. Then mix some 93 at next fillup if getting into hills. etc. Chevron owns Texaco.

Thanks for the advice.

My question about Chevron and Texaco was as to whether or not Texaco had Techron in it. But If I can buy it seperately that's perfect.

Thanks for all your help

You can always throw a couple of cans of octane boost in the back.

In answer to this question, the information below is from the Chevron/Texaco web site.......

Will the gasoline be the same at Chevron and Texaco stations?

No. The gasoline at Chevron service stations has our patented additive, Techron. Texaco stations in the United States are neither owned nor operated by ChevronTexaco, and their gasoline does not contain Techron.

Will Texaco gasoline contain Techron?

Former Texaco stations in the United States are neither owned nor operated by ChevronTexaco. The gasoline sold at those outlets does not contain Techron.
