I was getting ready to go to work and... SERVICE COLUMN LOCK shows up on the DIC. We're all familiar with this error message, whether you've received it or not.
I pulled fuse #25 for about 5 minutes, that did nothing. The motor that actuates the lock itself isn't even making a noise. I tried forcing the wheel to no avail.
I called the dealer and they want $425 to fix this know problem.
What are my options? Do I have any options? If I have the bypass overnighted to me, will that unlock the wheel AND prevent future problems?
Re: STRANDED - What are my options: Column Lock (ShanMan14)
Sometimes you can jerk the steering wheel back and forth will free it up. Had it work for em a couple times, but it took several tries to get it to free up.
Also there is a recall out or coming out very soon for this.
Re: STRANDED - What are my options: Column Lock (ShanMan14)
I've seen posted on the Z06 fourm about turning the steering wheel to the right...hard and turning the key at the exact right time and it freeing up.
2nd thing...yes you can install the column lock bypass while locked to unlock and prevent future lockups...according to the instructions with the bypass kit. No I've never had the problem...thank God...GM... my lucky stars...something!!
Re: STRANDED - What are my options: Column Lock (W!ngnut)
Thanks for the quick input. On a whim, I tried the second key and that worked. I pulled it out and inserted the original and that started working too. I don't know if it was the second key or if it just started working.

If the column is locked due to a malfunction (and will not normally unlock) it's too late to install the bypass. It will need to be repaired or start functioning normally before the bypass should be installed. Installing the bypass will not magically cause the column to unlock if it's malfunctioning.
Went to a Club Picnic Sunday, two members showed up without their Corvettes, one a 1998 6-speed, other is a 2000, both have their Vettes stuck at home - Steering Columns locked. One called the dealer, was told part was only $55.00, not sure of labor. The other was told over $500.00, but it has to be diagnosed, before they can fix it. Both are stuck. Why doesn't GM have a recall on these, neither are under the recall they have been told. My 98 auto, was recalled. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks. Larry in Florida.
My dealer wanted $425. If I can keep it working long enough to get the bypass installed tomorrow evening, I'll be okay [knock on wood]. I can't wait until GM decides it's time for my car to be recalled, I NEED my car!
What are we supposed to do, NOT drive our cars?
To delay the next occurrence (if you can park your car in a safe area) leave the key in the ignition switch when you stop the car. The column will not lock until the key is pulled from the switch. If it is locked you have to turn the ignition switch to accessory before the computer tells the column to unlock.
