Believe it or not the Transmission cases and gear ratio's are the same for the 700R4 and the 4L60E. The ratios are as follows 1st -3.06 2nd - 1.63 Drive (3rd) - 1.00 Overdrive (4th) - .70 The difference between the two is the 4L60E is computer controled while the 700R4 is cable controlled from the TV cable at the throttle body. There might be some differences with the clutch packs and other stuff, but even different year 700R4's have different clutch packs. I hope that helps a little.

The 4L60 (and 4L60E) are the replacement (newer, updated version) of the 700R4. If memory serves, the 700R4 stopped rolling into new cars/trucks by around the early 90s (I know my 92 Jimmy had the 4L60, not the 4L60E.) 4L60 is the newer version of the 700R4 and the 4L60E is electronically controlled. Same gearing, supposedly stronger.

Someone else may know the time frames more exact, but that's a ballpark.

All should be 4L60E in LT1/LS1 (can't say 100% on the latest years.) T56 in vettes and f-bodies, though they aren't exactly the same.

They are basically the same tranny. 700R4 was in 3rd gen F-bodies and early C4 vettes. 4L60 (700R4 with new GM tranny designation) was in 93 F-bodies and 91-93vettes. 94 and up F-bodies and vettes had 4L60E electronically controlled tranny. Running change to 4L65E (higher torque capacity) in 04 vettes.

Can't tell you the diff but I can tell you the 700R4 should have been called 700R4POS. Had it in an '84 Chevy van. Well actually had 4 of them as they didn't last long. Had it in my '84 Vette too. Well only 2 in the Vette so I guess I was lucky. They had trouble shifting in and out of over drive and would beat themselves to death.
