Oil change: Capacity specs shows 6.5 Qts.
Changed oil yesterday and with Mobil 1 filter and 6.5 qts. I am still showing about 1/2 qt load. Is this typical for the LS6? Do I add to the full mark?

The car is sitting level and has sat overnight so I know that the current oil level is at its capacity for 6.5 qts. Looks like it is going to take 7 qts to fill the crankcase.

Very interesting thread
My buddy said his 02 Z took 7 quarts to fill too; I just changed the oil in my 04 Z and it took exactly 6.5 quarts (I initially put 6 quarts in while on jackstands, then added another 1/2 quart once I got her off the stands and in the garage)

i just had my oil changed a few weeks ago and they filled it to the top with 7 quarts. i've read that if you drive hard at the track 7 qts is the way to go for most protection, but in my rigorous 12 mile stop & go work commute, that's obviously not an issue....
yep the specs say 6.5 w/oil & filter change, but go figure it'll take 7 quarts. do a search on the topic under my screen name & you'll read some much more informative posts on the matter.

My 04 Z 6.5 qts puts it a hair over half qt low. 7 qts puts it just a hair over the top full mark, which is fine.
Owner's manual says add 1 qt over the full mark for racing.
So I bet anything between 6.5 and 7 qts is fine for street. And about 7.5 qts for racing.

Fill it up to the dipstick mark and don't be concerned about overfilling it...I run an extra quart at the track(at least)and leave it in until the next change...it won't harm anything.

I put in 7 qts on my 97 and on my 03Z. However, per my Service Manual the proper way to measure the oil level is about 3 minutes after you have shut down a warm engine. The oil level will read a little higher then and will probably be close to the mark. When I do this with 7 qts in the engine the oil level is always a little higher than the mark.

First, the vehicle must be level.
Next, be aware that there is a set procedure to accurately measure the oil level.
Third, know that normal operation uses 6.5 quarts and competition operation uses 7.5 quarts.
My bullet is dealer serviced only, they use the whole 7 quarts. I gues they figure that is a good compromise between track use and normal use... ideal for someone that likes crisp acceleration to legitimate cruising speeds.
