Default What makes me hot!!

Beautiful morning here in Northern VA. Driving in with the top down and the radio up. It's 74 and clear and I'm running about 50MPH. I look down and see that the temp guage is pegged. I immediately pull over and raise the hood. No hot sounds (creaking, etc) and the recovery tank is fine. Level is good also. I check codes and I'm getting a P0118 code. Clear code and same thing. Guage is sweeping correctlywhen the ignition is turned on. As soon as I start it, it pegs again. I don't think I'm really running hot, but....

Help me please.

Pull off your air box and radiator shroud, sounds like you got a platic bag or other debries stuck against your cooling system.

About two weeks before I put on my Hurricane I ran over one of those damn plastic bags and did not see it come out the back. I was near my favorite tuner, 21st Cent MC so I pulled in and we put her on the rack. No bag to be found. Fast forward two weeks... Patrick pulls off the shroud for the Hurricane install and there is the damn bag! Stuck against the radiator

There was other no way to see it under the car or looking under the hood.

Good luck in solving your overheating problem.

That's the problem. I don't think it's really over-heating. It appears to be a sensor or guage problem.

Thanks, I will check though.

At that outside temp and that speed...
...I would suspect radiator full of debris...StuzVette problem resolved last week...
...sensor problem...or thermostat issue...

what does pegged mean...?

Definition: Pegged - Adverb used to describe a temperature guage that advances to the extreme limit immediately upon starting the car. Not almost all the way - all the way against the stops.

check to see if temp sending unit wire didn't come off or if it is grounding out on somthing. Or it could be a bad sending unit.

I just went through the same thing with my car. There were some air bubbles in the coolant line. Bled those off and didn't have the gauge problem again.

Just an idea here. What did the other guages read? Like the DIC or the HUD. I would think if the car was really that hot you would have got other message also, like on the DIC. Jus an idea.

Actually 'pegged' is an adjective, not an adverb. Or, it could be a past tense verb, it 'pegged when started'.

When I was having problems with my temp gauge, there were no DIC messages, such as low coolant.

I'd guess the temp sensor went bad. Hope you get it resolved.

Found it. I guess I bumped the temp sensor when I installed the MSD wires the other day. It took a couple of days to work itself free and was unplugged. OK now. Thanks
