Default Vats key code?

Need to have a spare key made for my 2003. How do I know what VATS code blank to order? Anybody know where to get one with the
50th anniv logo?

You can bring your key to the dealer and they can read it. There are 15 different types. Unless you find a descent dealer, they will charge you to read it. I bought my keys from Ecklers because they were a fraction of the cost of the dealer. The problem is getting it cut. I took it to the dealer and they wouldn't touch it even though it was a G.M. key still in the package. I took it to Lowe's home improvement and they cut it for me. It will only work one way though. Dealer told me they wouldn't cut it for that very reason. They have tried cutting their keys and had the same problem and didn't want to be responsible. I have an after market key which works both ways. Go figure. Well good luck key hunting.

I just went through this .I used my ohm meter to measure the resistance.Went to E-bay and ordered the VAT blank .The seller tells you the res.code.I am now waiting for the key. Then I have to take it to a lock smith to get it cut.Dealer wanted $30 .But I don't know if that was to cut it or just read res. and sell me a blank.$12.49 inc. ship.from e-bay .

Same here. Measure resistance with DMM, went to local key shop to order key, but for some odd reason, they happen to have one that someone had ordered and never picked up, so I took that and got it cut - $10 total. Ordered remote from ebay and programmed myself $29. I was in stealership last week and they had a sign up - $80 to order replacement if you did not have key plus $40 for cutting (?). $120 total - WOW!

OK, I was a little confused on how this works but I'm starting to understand. I found some replacement VATS key blank that fits the 1997 - 2004 Chevrolet Corvette on E-bay. Each VATS key has a resistor embedded within the key-blade, and each resistor has 1 of 15 possible values. So, I found information on how to read the resistance value of the key here http://www.keybitslockandkey.com/los...nstruction.htm.

Now, so I figure out which of the 15 possible resistor values it could be. Order the correct one from e-bay. Now, where do I take the key and have it, "cut" or copied?

Can you tell us more about how to read the resistance with an ohm meter, maybe a pic showing the meter reading? Thanks

I don't have a camera with me right now but I can tell you to take an ohm meter and touch 1 probe to 1 side of the pellet and the other probe to the other pellet .You should get a ohm reading on this.As an example, lets say my resistance was 523.If you look at the chart on keybits website it is a code 2.this is for the key I ordered.
