Congrats on the purchase, looks great.
I have headers with the stock Ti mufflers and I would not consider it loud. Maybe the PO did the bypass mod.
AFAIK the only way to get chrome (by no means an upgrade IMO) wheels was thru some dealers, not a factory option.
If your reverse lock out solenoid is working, you won't be shifting into R by mistake.
I don't think the radio displays the volume, but I'd have to check, rarely have it on TBH.
Impossible to say what the shifter is. Could just be a factory unit, maybe shortened with a TwistedShifterz or similar **** (line mine below). They are on solid mounts on the Z, so are noisy/have lots of feedback. Can you lift the boot and post a pic of under? Mine:

The smell is probably whatever oil you see leaking on the exhaust, but I would look into that.
I'd clean up the mess and ensure the grounding there is good.
I don't use it, but one of those rear view mirror switches is for the auto dimmer (for Dodge truck driver on your butt).

Factory wheels are the argent colored wheels and the ONLY different wheels available for the C5Z were on the 2004 CE LeMans Z's and those were the polished aluminum which I think are way better than any wheels chrome plated.
The level of noise in these cars is high due to lack of insulation. GM wanted to keep the car's weight down and they did....something in the 3150 pounds area....pretty light weight for a 400hp car.
Bugs do love the Millenium Yellow. They were all over my 04 MY Z when I had it.

Bugs thinks its the biggest freaking flower they've ever seen! They love MY. My '04 had massive road noise, so I picked up some RammAudio Rammat II, lifted up the trunk carpet, cleaned it with some alcohol, and then covered every inch with the material. Also covered the flat metal panels behind the seats. It made a HUGE difference, now at 70mph, windows down, radio blasting I could have an actual conversation with my passenger. Before it was impossible. Planned on doing the doors next, but the car got totaled so I'm looking for another....

First a remark though - wow this thing is noisy! Cruising at about 80 mph some pavement makes the car so very loud. It has the titanium exhaust, but I never knew that exhaust was that loud. Also I don't know if it was the lovely weather today or if it really is true, but I couldn't keep the bugs off this thing!

  • What are the pros/cons of this style Z06 wheel vs. the chrome Z06 wheels? I'm guessing these were the standard wheels, and the chrome were an upgrade?

Painted z wheels are about the lightest you can get. Most chrome z wheels are aftermarket and MUCH heavier

  • Is it possible to go into reverse instead of 5th? While test driving the car before I bought it, I think I started to let it out in 3rd instead of 5th (I was granny shifting and feathering the clutch a lot) but the shifter is aftermarket and feels shorter than the OEM shifter. When I looked at it I had a very hard time telling when I was in 5th or reverse as I was testing the shifter feel before starting it. Most cars reverse feels like it's way over and up or they have a pull up collar or something. I've been purposefully avoiding 5th gear as I think I missed it and went into 3rd once and I'm afraid I'll somehow stick it into reverse and destroy something.

When moving there is a reverse lockout so you can't shift into reverse by mistake

  • The engine looks clean overall, but when I drive at low speeds and after I get out I can smell a nasty hot oil smell from the driver side that's very strong. I checked the oil and it looks good and nothing appears to be leaking. The transmission did look a bit grimy though. All gauges look in normal operating range as well. I'm going to have the car gone over by a local Corvette specialist, but anything jump out as a possible issue here? The car doesn't even have 30k miles on it, so I'm not sure what it could be.

Could be a valve cover gasket leaking onto the exhaust manifold, easy fix if that's what it is.

  • I know this is aftermarket, but what is this specifically? It looks really nice, but of all the Z06's I've seen I haven't really seen this one before, and definitely not with the lower section being all carbon fiber.

Looks like a nice piece, not sure of the brand

  • Does the above look like anything of concern? I just noticed it looked kind of corroded and nasty. It's really the only spot under here that did and I may just be being overly picky.

Looks like minor corrosion, not a big deal

  • Should the radio display a volume level when I turn the ****? It feels weird to turn it and I have no level indicator since it's a free spinning ****.

    No volume level

  • Any idea what aftermarket shifter this might be? It's very noisy under the boot, I'm not sure how to get it off but it sounds to me like there used to be sound deadening material in there and when installing that shifter they removed it. I can hear the whine of the transmission and some other drivetrain noise coming from that area. Do some aftermarket shifters not have sound deadening that the OEM shifter has?

Hard to tell, could just be the stock shifter with a new ****, could be aftermarket

  • On my rear view mirror, the map lights are some really odd LED grid thing. They're green and orange, but when you turn them on it makes a strange whiteish light that the edges remind me of that 3D effect. It's so weird and I've never seen such a thing. Is there a reason this exists and isn't just a normal white/blueish LED?

Not sure never noticed it on mine
So happy to finally have this Z06 so I can join you guys in the fun instead of just admiring from afar. Just in driving it today, I've already gotten a few nods of approval, some people pointing at and checking the car out, and waves from fellow Vette drivers (I even passed a beautiful '96 Grand Sport out and about). Feels good to finally be here!

Congrats on your new ride, I see you picked the fastest color, enjoy it!

These are the steps I use to check the DIC:

To enter the Diagnostic Display function perform the following steps in order:

1. Turn ON the ignition switch, engine OFF.
2. Press the RESET button to acknowledge any warning messages present.
3. Press the OPTIONS button on the Driver Information Center (DIC) and hold.
4. While holding the OPTIONS button press the FUEL button 4 times within a 10 second period.
5. System will first enter automatic display mode followed by the manual display mode.
The automatic display feature allow you to read each module DTC display function in an automatic display sequence. Each system module DTC will be displayed for 3 seconds followed by a 1 second pause before the next DTC is displayed in an automatic sequence. If no DTC information is sent to the IPC from the system currently displayed on the IPC, the IPC will display NO CODES for that system. At any time during the automatic display function, the manual display feature can be activated by pressing any button on the DIC except the E/M 5 button. The E/M 5 button is used to completely exit the DIAGNOSTICS mode at any time. If there is a communications problem between any system, the IPC will display NO COMM when the IPC is trying to communicate with that system. When all DTCs have been displayed for all systems, the IPC will display NO MORE CODES for 2 seconds then will enter the manual display mode, waiting for manual mode operation.

The manual display feature allows you to manually select each module DTC display function. The manual mode will automatically be entered after the automatic DTC display sequence is complete, or can be entered at any time during the automatic mode by pressing any button on the DIC except the E/M 5 (E/M 5 button is used to exit the DIAGNOSTIC mode at any time). When the manual mode is selected, the IPC will display the MANUAL DIAGNOSTICS mode message for 2 seconds, or until any button on the DIC except the E/M 5 is pressed. After the MANUAL DIAGNOSTICS mode message is displayed, the IPC will display the first system abbreviation and quantity of codes stored for that system, then the IPC will wait for further instructions. The buttons on the DIC provide the following functions when operating the on-board diagnostic feature in the manual mode:

DIC Button Function

FUEL 1 Previous DTC
GAGES 2 Next DTC
TRIP 3 Previous System
OPTIONS 4 Next System
E/M 5 Exit Diagnostics
RESET Clear DTCs

I've never had an issue with my DIC but it's just another electronic component so I'm sure it could fail like anything else. My hvac display didn't work on mine when I got it but it was a pretty simple fix that I read about here and now works fine. Never heard of a fix for the DIC but there may be one. It could be that one of the contacts behind the rubber buttons is worn or corroded and not registering when you press it. Maybe take the cover off and check them all. If not you may need to replace the system.

Thats good you figured out the DIC. Definitely an aftermarket shifter, not sure what brand it is. I have an MGW and it doesn't look like that. None of the bolts should be loose, it shouldn't rattle. May want to trim that rubber a bit so it doesn't rub like that.

When I bought mine it was very loud going down the road, I ended up having a bad rear wheel bearing, changed that out and it's a lot quitter now.

On a stock shifter, the base of the shifter plate protrudes through the round rubber boot opening and seals out the noise. It is amazing how much that boot actually insulates the noise. Your aftermarket shifter leaves that hole open.

The MGW comes with several pieces of sound deadening material, but it uses the stock rubber boot to seal the shifter. Since your rubber boot is already damaged I'm not sure any shifter will seal properly in it anymore. The MGW requires that you cut a small piece out and it may be that you cut out the bad part of the boot anyways, so the damage that is has already wouldn't matter a single bit.

I have an MGW and I love it, well worth the money and the company/customer service is top notch.
