Default Flat spare key?

Did a search and didn't see anything very new on this ...

I want to get a spare key made to keep in my wallet. I tried getting a key made at Pep Boys and they didn't have any blanks (flat or otherwise) for the C6 key.

I know I could cut the plastic off the GM supplied key, and will probably resort to that, I've done it on a previous car ('83 Rx-7). But thought I'd ask here first. Anybody have any luck finding a place that will make a key?

Someone posted the correct key blank to buy a while back. If I remember correctly they got it at Ace Hardware. Hopefully they'll chime in soon as I also need to pick one up.

Go to a real locksmith if you need any type of specialty key....Pep Boys or Ace Hardware just doesn't 'cut it.' (pun intended)

I kept a note in my wallet regarding this. The blank is a Hillman B-106 and the poster bought it at Ace Hardware, but I think any real locksmith would have it.

I just trimmed the plastic off - and drilled a hole - this may be quicker / easier than trying to hunt down a less common key blank.

A flat key fits very nicely in a wallet, or in a pocket with FOB.

How did you get the black stuff off so clean? I tried this before and could never get the key that clean.

I have done it in the past ... the "key" no pun intended is to use a rotary tool with a cutting wheel on it (Dremel) ... but before cutting it, I put the key in the oven on a foil sheet for 10 minutes at 250degrees ... the plastic get's soft ... and just peels off after you cut it.

I did some research on this and was told by a locksmith that the blank needed is a B106. That particular locksmith didn't have one in stock and sent me to another who did. It's a Saturn key - probably not at all uncommon. I cut part of the head off, put it in a small plastic envelope and slipped it into my wallet. I just carry the bare fob in my pocket; it's much more convenient than the fob plus key.

Very good suggestions, I may just look into both options.

Thanks as well.

Good luck. The 2 Ace's I tried did not have that blank.

That idea sounds half-baked

I read all this with great interest visualizing trimming a key or buying one to carry in my wallet, then I realized I would immediately lock myself out of my home since I carry TWO keys on my C6 fob!

Oh well, back to forums for more answers

I'm not sure about the Saturn key - I have one here, and although it looks very similar it has a smaller groove in the middle. The keys won't fit in the other car's locks. Of course there may be more than one Saturn key style.

I just had a spare made at the dealer then ground the plastic off with a grinder and put it in my wallet. I carry the fob without the key around my neck on a lanyard or in my pocket.
