Default Question on closing rear hatch Coupe

The manual says this:

"Closing the Rear Compartment (Coupe)
To assist in closing the rear compartment lid of
your coupe, use the pocket on the underside of the lid
on the passenger’s side of the vehicle. When closing the
lid, lower it until the power pull down latch feature
activates and it will close the rest of the way and latch
automatically."

First question: The Pocket is completely smooth, is there supposed to be a handle or something there? Nothing to grab, so I don't see how that's much help....

Second question, at what point does the power pull down motor take effect? I'm thinking I've got it 99.9 percent closed anyway when the latch finally closes, so maybe I'm missing the point?

Thanks,

Sometime during 2007 production it appears GM stopped installing the grab handle in that little recess. Guess they didn't update the manual at the same time.

As for the pulldown feature, I'm glad to have it. With the large amount of weatherstripping, the hatch simply wouldn't fully close on its own without the pulldown. Try closing the hatch on a C5--you almost always have to push on the hatch to get it closed, unless the windows are open.

Thanks Duck,

Now, anyone know at what point one would expect the motor to take over? As I mentioned before, it doesn't seem to do much for me, I've already got it 99% closed. Is this normal?

Thanks again

Matt

Yep, it doesn't catch until the top of the deck is within approx. 0.25 to 0.5 inches of closing.

That's normal.

If you had the handle, the idea is to give it a swift pull down and when the hatch touches the car the motor engages and pulls it the rest of the way down.

Don't know why they eliminated the handle, it could be idiots where slamming there finger in between the hatch and the car because they weren't coordinated enough to pull there hand out quickly. You know those lawyers.

Too many aggies is my guess.

I do have the handle but I don't pull it down swiftly nor do I slam the hatch down. I lower the hatch (carefully) until it is resting on the latching mechanism. Then, I push down sharply/firmly on the top of the hatch (directly over the latching mechanism) with the palm/heel of my hand until I hear the locking mechanism engage and pull the hatch closed. On the rare occasion when the hatch closes but I don't hear the pull-down mechanism engage, I repeat the process. I like to hear the mechanism engage so that I''m sure the hatch is closed properly. If you're worried about a 'hand' print on the paint, you can always use a clean rag or even your shirttail.

I always push my hatch down at the very base/back of the rear window. I never touch the paint unless there is a microfiber towel between my hand and the finish.

If you bought an '05 you'd get one of these

I just pull mine down and once it gets close it closes itself nicely. No slamming or pushing.

You'd also have one of those if you had an 06 (I do) or an 07 made before the middle of December, 2006.

My '07 has a build date of the 15 and has the handle so I just made the cutoff date.

If doors are closed & windows up, you have to give it pretty good pull down for it to catch because of air pressure. Being gentle will not be enough.

Have the handle on my 07, and I find it convenient to have. Built just before the Generel decided to omit the handle.

I wish the windows would lower (same as when you open and close the door) to allow the rear hatch to close easily, I pretty much have to slam the hatch down to engage the motor to secure the hatch as the air pressure in the car prevents the hatch from just being lowered and locked shut.

I haven't had a problem with the hatch pulling down. Sometimes I'll lower the hatch to within 8 or so inches from closing and let it go. On most occasions it will grab and pull down. If not, I just push down on the middle of the lid and it grabs.

I never slam the lid. I pull it down until it stops and then push down on the middle until I hear the latch engage..
