I am not surprised, I have been told mobil1 isn't the best synthetic oil available.

This could be true but it really is just an advertisement.

I would check that it meets the GM standard (4718M??) on the specs. I know Castrol's full syn doesn't, or isn't printed on the label. I thought I saw that Valvoline's full syn doesn't have it on the label either. If you look at Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum, both do state it meets GM's standards.

Just a thought....not trying to start an argument.

Here's the page from Mobil Oil (http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...1_5W-30.aspx):

Mobil 1 5W-30

The Mobil 1 5W-30 grade delivers the viscosity recommended for most General Motors vehicles and many imports. Mobil 1 5W-30 is the first choice of premium car manufacturers, including Corvette. Mobil 1 5W-30 meets:

* GM 6094M, GM 4718M (Corvette spec)
* Ford WSS-M2C929-A
* Honda HTO-06
* ACEA A1/B1
* ILSAC GF-4 (API Certified - Starburst)

Mobil 1 5W-30
Mobil 1 5W-30 is an ILSAC GF-4 energy conserving viscosity that provides excellent all season protection. This product also meets the requirements for diesel-powered vehicles where an API CF or CD oil is recommended.

Mobil 1 5W-30 is recommended for all types of modern vehicles, including high-performance turbo-charged, supercharged gasoline and multi-valve fuel injected engines found in passenger cars, SUVs, light vans and trucks.

* Mobil 1 5W-30 is general purpose engine oil for all types of vehicles where a 5W-30 viscosity is recommended.
* Mobil 1 is not recommended for 2-Cycle or aviation engines, unless specifically approved by the manufacturer.

As are all Mobil 1 products, it is designed to provide outstanding wear protection, maintain excellent engine cleanliness, and the performance reserve to keep engines in newer cars running smooth and clean.

For more information, see the Mobil 1 5W-30 Product Data Sheet and Material

I vote for Mobil 1 and here is why. I've been using it for some 30 years. I have a 1993 Jeep Grand C with a 318 CU inch motor that's been on Mobil 1 since new and changed every 6000 miles until three years ago when I quit using it as a daily driver. Now it gets changed every couple of years. That Jeep runs like new and does not need oil added after 6000 miles and the car has over 205,000 mile on it. A couple of months ago I did an oil change on it and used the new 0W-30 Mobil 1. After all those years on 10W-30 I can feel the difference.

I use Mobil 1 20W-50 in my Harley Davidson bikes.

There may be better oil out there but this stuff is good enough and it's available at Wally World. It's also 100% PAO ( Poly-Alpha-Olefin or 100% synthetic )and resists heat well.

I first encountered Mobil 1 back when it was first being used by the Air Force in C9 jets - that was more than 30 years ago. I figured if it was good enough for jet engines it was good enough for my Corvettes.

My last Corvette, a C4, had 186,000 Mobil 1 miles on the odometer when I traded it for the C6. The C4 is living happily 40 miles north of me, now, with 225,000 on the clock....

Found on valvoline.com...it's not surprising the Synpower has 4x better wear.

I'm happy with Mobil 1.

I will stick with Mobil 1 since it is approved by GM and I have not had any problems using it in any of my GM cars.

I now use Mobile one in all my 4 stroke engines. Sure cuts down on oil inventory.

Considering the source.. and "what independent" testing and what did they test?.. lot's of holes... I have one word

PAOs (Group IV base stocks) are far superior to Group IIIs regardless of additives!

These oil threads usually end up the same way as the "which wax is better" threads.

I will stick with Mobil 1. They've at least taken the time to obtain the GM4718M certification.

Mobil is trying to get Valvoline to substantiate their claims and so far they haven't.

I used Mobil 1 once in my C3 and it leaked out so I went back to Castrol and haven't had any problems with the engine, it's got almost 200k miles on it now, but I do and will continue to use Mobil 1 in my C6.

I am the independent lab. Valvoline paid me $2 million to do the testing.
