I have very good tread on my drivers side rear tire, but almost none on the passenger side tire. They look identical otherwise, same type and age.
They are the Goodyear EMT's that came with the car, probably not the original tires, but the original equipment. I have an '06 vert. by the way.
Does one side spin more than the other when spinning the tires? I don't do burnouts, but I bought the car with 28k on the clock and I'm not sure what life it led before I got her. My first few cars when I was a teen only spun the passenger side rear tire, but I thought the Vette had a posi-traction type of setup.
I thought I remembered Wolfdogs saying a few weeks back that one side wore faster than the other, but I can't remember if it was front or rear tires, or for what reason.

Is uneven rear tire wear normal?

the outside crown edge of the steer axle front tire usually wears faster due to the fact that folks make way more right turns than left turns... the rear no.
you got a tough one there... not knowing the cars history or that tires history.. that tire could have been a used tire placed on the car before sale due to a flat on the o.e....who knows.. or.. the one on the other side could be newer the the the worn one too.
Not having examined the wot traction path of my vette.. i can't say exactly how well these limited slips diffs work.. i know with the cars in my past, its usually the right rear that starts to spin first before the clutches in the diff whack the other side.....
Well, I've worn out 3 sets of Z51 Supercar tires on A6 Z51 Coupes. The center of each rear tire tends to wear a little more than the edges if you use the stock 30 psi cold, but left-right wear was equal.
I don't do burnouts, but occasionally spin a little from a start.
I assume you are keeping the same air pressure in both tires. Do they have the same after the tires heat up? If there is a big difference in the tread depth, I suspect someone replaced the left tire (warranty replacement maybe) along the way. That would account for one rear tire having more tread than the other. Just my take because I don't know how much difference there is.
I've gone thru rear tires. Mine wear fairly evenly. True tho, it used to be even with limited slip, the right rear would go first. Not knowing those first 28K miles leaves you in the dark; it could be any reason including different tires put on as wolfdogs said.
The rr tire is the drive tire and will wear faster than the lr, with that said there shouldn't be a big difference if they are both maintained the same. Well thats what I have been told.
Thanks for the replies everyone, I just went out and checked each tire.
the worn one was manufactured in the 43rd week of 2005. I wonder if it could possibly be original? Probably not, the car has 39k+ miles on it. The other tire looks different, it either doesn't have that same stamping on it, or it's been rubbed off. It has a slightly different look, though they are both Goodyear F1's. Thanks John Harry for that link, it's good to know. I guess the newer tire has a stamping on the inside tread, I couldn't find the date on it.
The old tire is worn down to next to nothing, the other rear has 85% left. My car had a 4-wheel alignment last year and doesn't pull or feel funny at all. It's not lowered -- until I squeeze my 6'4" 275 lb. frame in it. Also, I keep my pressures all at 30 lbs. I check frequently.
I guess I need new rears pretty soon. Firestone Wide Ovals, I think.
Thanks again everyone for helping me figure this out.
The date stamp on the other one may be on the inside sidewall..as it is not necessarily on both sides...it cannot be rubbed off without damaging the tire...check the inside sidewall.

def not original at 43rd week of '05. if you think about it, the '05s probably started rolling off the line sometime in late '04 (if I recall) and the last week of production would've been around june, late. that puts it at about 26th week or so. oddly, that was an old/new tire that was put on whenever, sometime before you bought it with 28K miles.
