Default Changed oil. lost a quart?????

I changed my oil today. always been using Pennzoil Ultra. and i put 6 quarts in as always. and upon draining i only could muster a little less than 5 quarts. i thought it was rather odd that it seems like i lost a quart?? should i be worrying?? the car is a 2007 Z-51. 70,000 miles.

Were you a qt low on the dipstick? How long since your last oil change?

You probably had a 1/2 qt in the filter.

Check your empty oil containers... there are six, right?

I recently had to add a liter (roughly same as a quart) to my '07. I'm at 17000 miles, daily driver with some aggressive driving. In my case, I consider it normal. FWIW, oil consumption and the number of miles until the DIC shows zero life for my vette has been identical to what I experienced with my previous car, a BMW. The BMW even came from the factory with a spare liter of oil tucked away in the trunk. I all ways keep a liter of Mobil 1 in my trunk

There is almost always some oil left in the car; you really can't get it all out. I usually have between 1/2 and 1 qt. left in the engine. It's OK., just don't over-fill as a result.

The best way to determine oil consumption is with the dipstick IMO. Check it after a change with the engine cold. Do the same thing periodically.

This happens to me too. I think the likely cause in my case, it's on the low end of the normal range on the dipstick pre change, and more towards the high end on the dipstick mark post change. That and what is stuck inside the filter, pans, and funnel even. I say don't worry about it.

How many miles since last oil change. Burning some oil is normal.

To have that much left you're either not changing the filter or you're car is on a slope away from the drain plug opening. An ounce maybe, especially if you just shut the engine off. I always wait 10 to 15 minutes after I turn it off to open the plug, or wait that long after the plug is opened before putting it back in back in and refilling.

Some of the oil probably went into your intake (no catch can I presume), some is consumed by the engine and some left behind. It's not abnormal.

I would definitely do regular oil level checks. Going a quart or more down can result in premature failure with lifter damage being one example.

between whats left in the filter, the motor, and oil blow by (as evident by a catch can) i think such a loss is normal

Assuming you accurately accounted for everything along the way 1 quart is a bit much to be unaccounted-for. A small discrepency is normal. Did you figure for the oil in the filter? Is it possible you simply miscounted? At this point I'd run the car, let it sit and recheck the dipstick level.....adjust as needed. Good luck.

My engine uses NONE between oil changes (one year or 7,000 miles) and I don't use a catch can.

did you check the dipstick before the oil change? my engine burns oil and it is normal, especially if you open it up once in a while

Same here. I have about 6,000 miles since my last oil change and it's still full on the dipstick.

If you do WOT pulls frequently you will see an increase in oil consumption in most cases.

The ideal and realistic method would have been checking the dipstick BEFORE the oil change to determine oil quantity. Measuring the drained quantity is ok, but not absolute. As other have suggested, many factors are in play....oil filter, about a 1/2 pint, saturated thoroughly,....incomplete drain, probably another pint (by the way, if you are using a lift, you can use a reasonably sized extra spacer on the front contact points). Then add the subtraction for normal oil consumpsion...probably pretty close to a quart low.

4,000 miles since last change. i always put 6 quarts in car at change time. i drained oil. and recycle it put back into 5 quart jug that new oil came in. and oil didnt come to top of 5 quart jug. i just thought it was rather odd that 1 quart was lost in process. i know there is some left in car. with oil cooler and such. i drive it pretty hard i guess. was just curious if anyone else ever went through this.

40k on the clock and no oil use. Change oil twice a year at a minimum using Mobil 1 and GM filter. 2008 Z51.
