Default Does the computer in a C6 log top speed driven?

So...I am looking at a new 2012 GS at my local dealer. I am looking at if for the third time in a day, deciding if I want to trade my 09 Vert for it.

Some saleshole comes up to me and said he had it up to 135 and hardly had the throttle down.

I asked him why would he do that to a car with only 82 miles on it? He said he was joking.

Is there a way to check to see if this clown was really joking or not?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I think the "black box" records everything, but is supposed to be used for accident reconstruction........yeah, right.

Sound like more than a few test drives Eighty two miles does not sound like much ....BUT...... I can have quite a bit of fun, lets start with a couple of burnouts and go from there there.

Yes, the computer logs top speed. No, you aren't likely to be able to get at it and the SDM records in a continuous loop so it would have been overwritten in the next ignition cycle in any event.

Thanks very much!

I was hoping it did and the Service guys could let me know...but I guess I'll just have to check the rear tires....

Even if it had been up to 135 it probably didn't hurt a thing, some say the engine needs no breaking in. These cars can take it.

It keeps something like the last 8 seconds. If he had crashed it, you could have seen the speed, if brakes were applied, if cruise control was on, probably some other stuff.

That's why I don't like to buy cars on the showroom floor that have been test driven by others and from people going in and out of car. Factory order is

I doubt it - not enough memory for that. My understanding is that the SDM constantly monitors a bunch of variables, but only stores them in non-volatile memory when an airbag deployment, near deployment, or some similar near-collision event occurs.

Unless you have a device like the Window Valet installed the top speed probably isn't being recorded anywhere.

True, but if it did going 135 is probably not his main concern.

The Event Data Recorder (EDR) records does not record "everything." It records certain information from a vehicle immediately before and/or during most serious crashes. Some constantly record data on a loop while others are activated during specific events and then begin recording. Chevy has been using them in their cars, in one form or another, since the mid-1990's.

Effective in 2013, all event data recorders must record the following information:

- Change in forward crash speed
- Maximum change in forward crash speed
- Time from beginning of crash at which the maximum change in forward crash speed occurs
- Speed vehicle was traveling
- Percentage of engine throttle, percentage full (how far the accelerator pedal was pressed)
- Whether or not brake was applied
- Ignition cycle (number of power cycles applied to the EDR) at the time of the crash
- Ignition cycle (number of power cycles applied to the EDR) when the EDR data were downloaded
- Whether or not driver was using safety belt
- Whether or not frontal airbag warning lamp was on
- Driver frontal airbag deployment: time to deploy for a single stage airbag, or time to first stage deployment for a multistage airbag
- Right front passenger frontal airbag deployment: time to deploy for a single stage airbag, or time to first stage deployment for a multistage airbag
- Number of crash events
- Time between first two crash events, if applicable
- Whether or not EDR completed recording

You are missing the most imPOtent lesson of all.

Do NOT go to car dealerships for entertainment. Go to car dealerships only when you are ready to buy. Otherwise, go to a movie theater. It's much cheaper.

Going to a car dealership when you are bored is a bad idea.
