Default High temps

For the last couple of days I have been seeing some high and strange temps for water and Oil.

Background: 08 with Z51 package, 116,000 miles. coolant changed at around 100,000 miles, coolant and oil levels are normal. Normal water temps 210-230(when stuck in traffic on hot days), Oil 210-230. checked radiator and there is nothing blocking it.

Day one(Monday): Driving into work in city driving ambient air mid 50s after about 10-15 driving I looked at my water temp and it was at 240, this is sitting at several lights not much movement, upon getting on the fwy, in slow traffic 25-35 mph the temps dropped back down to 220 oil was at 230.

Driving home from work ambient temp 80: Once started city driving the water temp climbed really fast, 3 maybe 4 mins to 190 in which they stabled off, usually it takes much longer then this for the car to get up to normal temp. When open road and fwy temps stayed at 210-220, only when in traffic on fwy did they start to rise again, little traffic on Mondays so temps never went above 220, oil temp 230.

Day Two(Tuesday): ambient temp 50deg. Car again got up to temp within 4 min. At stop lights temps would go up 2 deg about every 20 sec, once moving temps would come back down. on fwy doing 75mph water temp stayed at about 194 normal, oil 210. when stopped temps would climb back.

From what it looks like is that the engine is not getting water or enough circulation till the thermostat opens up, and there is little flow while the car is at idle. is this signs of a water pump going bad?

Check the least expensive things first. Start by insuring the air path is clear of debris. Get down and look under the front as plastic bags, etc. have been known to find their way Ito the air intact area. If that's all good, check radiator caps and fluid levels and if thats all good, then investigate thermostat, water pump, fans, etc. as these will be higher cost to fix.

Agree with dpigguy ^^^^^^^^

Could be as simple as rad cap not holding pressure. This would allow it to run hot before fan allowed to work. the fact you can bring temp down by driving says fan is not working.

Turning air conditioner on and having fan would say fan is good.

luck

If the fan wasn't kicking in it would be a lot hotter than that.

Highest I've ever seen on mine is about 220 in city traffic with outside temp at 95 degrees.
